Sluggish 2006 E450 6.8 10 cyl

New to us twenty six foot Class C. We’ve driven it about 10K primarily in California and Arizona. Others with this engine speak to its ability to climb in the mountains. We’re in the right lane/flashers on/45 mph. Engine has just over 30k on it now. Thought about seeing if Seafoam might make a difference – don’t know if that’s a reasonable idea or how much to use. Next thought is to go to a dealer – but would love to have some ideas/thoughts on what the most logical things to check might be before throwing money it not having the knowledge to know if I’m being lead down the garden path kinda thing! Thanks!

  • Tell us what brand/model RV you have and what grade/pass you were ascending and there are guys on here that can clue you in. Guys on here have driven every hill in every state at some time or other.
  • Are you letting the RPMs climb? No reason you can't let it sit at 4500 RPM the entire way up. The V10 makes it power by revving.

I'd skip on the seafoam. Unless it had some other pre-existing condition, it would not be fouled up at 30,000 miles. Plus, driving hard like it's meant to be driven will keep it clean anyways.
  • Sounds normal to me. You're lugging a heavy object uphill. Did you know, by the way, that the air gets thinner at higher altitude and this reduces available HP? Turbocharged engines do better because the turbo forces more air in. But even so, slowing down on grades just makes sense because the transmission is not invincible; heat it up too much and you'll be in the repair shop.
  • Second gear at 45 MPH up a 6 percent grade seems about right with my experience in a 2004 V10.... just saying....
