step issue

Is your battery fully charged?

When was the last time you cleaned and lubed the joints on the steps?

Check the easy things first.

Certain Tiffin's had a recall on the coach step brand. Might give em a call for a free replacement

First thing, Take lots of pictures for reference. Take a hammer and tap the step motor, If that doesn't help Unplug the motor underneath and use a 12v battery (I use a lawn tractor battery)
Hook-up leads and see if you can activate step ( be sure to keep your fingers out of the step mechanism ) Reverse polarity to open and close. If that doesn't work then knock lynch pin out
( It will be tight under tension) Be sure steps are moving freely. Remove motor and take apart gear box look for 3 plastic type plugs. These are window regulator plugs available at Napa etc less than $10.00. I'm assuming you have a car window elec window motor. Generally the motor never goes bad but the plugs get flat spotted. Also assuming steps are regularly lubed. Good luck. Bill

The coach is two years old, and I keep the steps lubed with silicone lube. My steps are the Kwickee brand that are not part of the recall. I will try what you said to do, thanks.

Had a similar problem with our 2013 Tiffin. Try lubricating the button in the door jamb that signals when the steps should retract.

We had a step issue with our Monaco Dynasty. They would occasionally stick 'out' not retracting all the way. I would clean the ball bearings really good with Simple Green and use an old tooth brush to clean out the debris.

I used only dry lube for the steps.

I would have to go through this routine at least once a year and they would work perfectly. We don't have retractable steps in the new coach, all the steps are on the inside as the door is positioned lower in the frame. I surely don't miss the auto steps.

1. LUBE the pivot and linkages---Classic sign of corroded linkages
2. The LCI recall has NOTHING to do with any operational problem
3. You may have a weak motor, but until you get the linkages lubed and free, you cannot tell for sure. Doug

Put a new motor in it. They do go bad as I have replaced mine twice.....last one cost $45 at autozone. Make sure you put the pin in the top side of the gear as it keeps the gears aligned.

First clean the grounding wire connection at the coach frame. There are no limit switches or such to tell the control when the steps are fully retracted or extended. Instead the controller monitors motor current. When the steps hit a limit or obstruction motor current spikes and the controller shuts off power. Poor grounding and you'll get an early current spike. Retraction has a slightly higher current demand due to gravity then extending which could explain why you get full extension.

I'm also thinking may be the drive gear has broken teeth. The gear is cast pot metal and is the weak link in the mechanical chain. Loose a tooth or two and the stairs will stop at that gear position.

Be very careful working on the steps. Unexpected extension or retraction with you fingers in the wrong spot isn't something I even want to think about.
