stewart warner

On my 2000 Dutch Star, the Stewart Warner electric speedometer has gone goofy. It reads all over the place while driving. It will go from 85 to 0 to 35 and more while riding at about 60. I'm currently judging my speed using my Tachometer. Any and all advice will be helpful repairing this. Oh! One more thing. I like to do my own repairs when possible.
  • Find the instrument cluster ground. Clean it up be sure it is tight and located on a good source for grounding.
  • went a little brain dead on last post. the same speed sensor feeds the trans tcu and the engine ecm and the speedo head if the trans ***** ok and the cruise control works ok it is most likely the speedo head
  • it could be the speed sensor on the tailshaft of the trans or the wiring near the connector. the vibration on the wire harness can cause a wire to break between the main harness and the sensor causing erratic operation also check the connection for corrosion also does the odometer register the correct millage if it does the speedo head is probably defective

Check the connections on the rear of the gauge. it is either the gauge or the sender.

Is the Odometer recording the proper milage ?
  • GMC products had the same symptoms for a few years. Turned out it was the stepper motors that drove the needles. You could by one on line and solder it in place of the old one. You had to remove the gauge cluster though.
  • I don't know about fixing it, but my GPS shows my current speed - which turns red when I go over the speed limit.

I don't normally look at the speedometer.
