Taylor spark plug wires

If anyone on this site is considering buying Taylor plug wires, BEWARE.

Their new warranty is only good for 90 days.

I bought a set of "409" Wires based on a recommendation from a current RV owner.
This Taylor set lasted just over 5000 miles when 4 out of the 8 burned out while on the road during a 2 week trip.

When I reached out to Taylor for warranty help, all I got was, Sorry.

Considering that the OEM set lasted for 35000 miles, I guess I know where I'm going to spend my money.

Buyer beware.
  • You may have gotten some poor quality wires, but your coach has a known defect that causes them to burn. The Workhorse chassis with the Chevrolet engine does not get enough airflow across the exhaust manifolds and plug wires. You need to get something like dryer tubing and route some air over both manifolds when you replace the plug wires.

I burned through two sets of 8mm ign wires in 30,000 miles before switching to Taylor wire 11.1 mm thick with FG boots to insulate the plug from the wire. The wires have about 70,000 miles on them now and are still working fine. I switched to Thorley headers at the same time so that reduced some heat. How thick were the Taylor wires you bought? Were the 4 wires that failed on the same head? Were these the same wires that failed originally? I did what Don suggested and ran ducting to cool the plugs, unfortunately rain got into the ducting during a storm and my exhaust manifolds cracked, that's when I switched to headers and the thicker wires.
  • I've had the Taylor EXTREME wires for 55,000 miles so far and they are still doing well. This set comes with the extra heat shields around each plug wire.
Some coaches did not have the front end designed with enough openings to provide proper air flow to the engine compartment. For those coaches, WH sold an accessory kit to provide more air flow over the rear of the engine. I'm not sure if any of these kits are still available but you may check with "workhorseparts.com."

  • 90 days!!! That's a walmart warranty! Well no doubt warranties are becoming less and less across the board. May want to go more heavy duty.

same thing I put on my PA when I had it.Never had another problem.
  • Obviously some people have had a good experience, while others, not so much. My problem, is a company that won't stand behind their product when there is a problem. If what the OP says is correct, and we have no reason to doubt his story, Taylor dropped the ball, IMHO and I would think twice before I used them. I want a company that will stick by their product when there is a problem.

Spark plug wires are electrical items. There are very few electrical components that are warranted at all. Most have a no return policy when it comes to electrical parts. The OP also did not mention how long it took for him to put the 5000 miles on those wires. One month, two, a year????
Taylor sells all types of wires and the "Extreme" series is rated for locations where heat is a problem. The "409" series is less expensive and obviously cannot handle the heat in the OP's application.
  • Taylor has had this conversation to many times with people who decided to save a few dollars on their plug wires. If you had talked to someone familiar with the 8.1 plug wire issue and had purchased the top of the line Extreme wires Taylor most likely would have stepped up. You put 409s, they are cheaper and not protected, on an RV and they burned up. You are not the fist person that has made this mistake and expected Taylor to do something. In this situation Taylor is going to stick to their warranty.

  • The OEM wires lasted for 35000 miles until they finally burned out.
So that means that airflow is not that much of a problem but still exists. I am in the process of correcting the issue.

I went with the "409" wires based on a recommendation from an RV forum. Silly me.
The warranty period was 5 years.

It took me 18 months to get to 5000 miles. Sorry but most of our trips are close to home.
And we travel about once per month.

    ***UPDATE***
Taylor Vertex has agreed to credit me the purchase price of the 409 wires and apply that amount to the new Ceramic Boot Wires.
They also advised that the new warranty period on all of their wires is 90 days.
