Tires Dry Rotting

I have a 2001 dutchmen class c motorhome. The tread depth on the tires are great but I have not moved the rv in a while and the tires are dry rotted. I am a newbie to the rv world learning as I go. For no on should I put the rv on jack stands cause I do not have levelers. I did armorall the tires but that did not seem to help.

What can I do to prevent this I have been going through tires every 4 years they are michelin 225/75 R16 load range E.

Is there a certain brand tire out there to prevent this from happening?

Thanks all!!

  • OH MY!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. The tires recalled are the ones I bought in 2010. Thanks again everybody for the info and your quick responses. Love this forum!!
  • Tires only last 5~7 years, maybe 10 if you are real lucky. Tire covers don't help. trying to wear them out actually helps. The problem according the tire professionals I used to work with is that the adhesives that hold the layers together just age out. Apparently, there are parts of all of this that get circulated when they are moved, but no guarantees there either. The best bet I replace a pair that are close to 7 years old and keep replacing a pair at a time for those three years. In three years, start again.

  • I bought two Michelin MS2s the other day. The tire man said they are expecting them to last longer than the M/S ones we had before. They will replace 2003 and 2005 Michelin tires on the 1992 van.

Funny, I have a 1983 van in the yard, parked since 1995. The tires are still holding up. I put some air in every couple of years just in case I get it towed away.

Cover the tires to prevent sun damage. You might get another year out of them.
  • Proper care is essential for longer life. Keeping the tires clean is a good start. You might want to invest in some tire covers, you should drive it down the road every now and then.
  • you just might be lucky ,theres a michilin recall on tires ,get the serial numbers and go to the michilin recall sight . mine are 9yrs old geting new ones this week , siting or moving thay rot.
  • Tires age out.........very rarely wear out.

    Budget accordingly.

Our RV gets new shoes roughly every 5 yrs. AND they ain't cheap!!
  • In 23 years of owning Class C's, I have never gotten more than 6 years on a set of tires. They get cracks in the sidewalls, which is what I guess you are calling dry rot.

Tires should be a regular budget item for your RV. Your life and your RV depend upon them.
