Use automatic levelors during storage?

I have a 2016 Fleetwood Storm 28, Ford V-10 with 4 self levelers. If in storage for no more than a month at a time should I use the levelers to get the 4 tires off the ground? Also how important is it for the tires to not be in contact with the ground, dirt, water for a month or less? I see some people place blocks under each tire to keep it off the ground while in storage. Are tires that delicate to be needing this kind of attention?

  • I've alway's used my jacks when storing my RV and I've been doing it since 1976! The purpose of this for me is to take weight off the tires. I have Michelin Tires on my RV (XRV's) and Michelin's Quality Tire Care Website advises to use a barrier between your tires and the ground. The reason I do this is to get optimin tire performance and tire care.
  • Put the jacks down, that's what they are for, takes some pressure off the tires. My manual says to store the RV with the jacks down.
  • Tires off the ground = no parking brake. Not a smart way to park a coach.
  • Jacks down, Jacks up...... Personal preference. If you don't want your tires on the ground, just drive up on some plywood squares

    Well Sir,
Without being sarcastic here, how many motor homes at full time sights, all over this nation, do you see with rotted tires? NONE! While storing in standing water MAY not be advised, what about all the people back east, in the Midwest, ALASKA and any other place on this planet that has LOTS OF WATER on roadways and streets and driveways, not to mention snow for much of the year that many drive in day in and day out and PARK IN IT, etc? I don't see many tires rotting off any of those cars, trucks, motor homes, large tractor trailers and more because they MAY come in contact with water on their tires.

So, parking your coach, in storage for even considerably longer than your intended month, I'm pretty sure will not do anything to your tires. It won't hurt the jacks, the Jack seals, the Jack system, they hydraulic fluid, NOTHING!

Ours has spent as much as 3-4 months straight, on the jacks while we had other things going and, there's no detrimental damage what so ever.

  • Jacks down or up: no difference
    all tires off ground: NEVER!!!
  • My motorhome doesn't know if it's parked for storage or on a camp site, so the jacks are always down. Maybe it takes some stress off the suspension, but it also makes walking around in the coach more stable.
  • I have read here on the forum that some people have had the levelers stick in the down position after leveling them down for storage. if you are really want the tires off the ground get some wood to put under the tires while you are gone. if the wood rots or breaks it is so much easier to replace then repairing the jacks
  • When you go off traveling for a month or two in the MH, on the cars you leave at home, do you jack them up so the tires are off of the ground?

And, the short answer to your question "Are tires that delicate to be needing this kind of attention?" is NO.
