- cwdavisExplorerBear Creek is essentially 'downtown', and conveniently accessed -- it's right off I-04. We stay there often, when we're heading west and need an overnight on the 1st day out, or the last day on the return. If you go here, be sure to visit the NC Farmer's Market, located catty-corner from the campground, on the other side of the freeway.
Moma Gerties is located east of Asheville a bit, 'down the mountain'; this is where we stay when we go to the area for a few days and want a more non-urban, relaxing site.
Both are terrific campgrounds! - sorenExplorer

I hear the Biltmore house is nice. A little old, but well kept and clean. Not sure what they charge, but should not be much as I don't think very many folk stay there anymore.
Either a twisted sense of humor, or we forgot to take our meds. this morning? As for the question at hand, we stayed at Rutledge lake and it was just fine. Nice folks, fairly quiet location, and close to everything you need. - GoateeExplorerI live near Asheville, so have never stayed there. However, I did check out Bear Creek and it is small, neat and well kept. The nice sites are back ins; don't go to the pull throughs as they are in a different area and not very nice. There is nothing to do once you are there, either. As cold as it's been, I doubt they will have the small pool open.
If it were me, I'd look at the two KOA's, one on the east side and one on the west side. With 40, 240, and 26 running thru you can get to Biltmore pretty quickly.
Biltmore is expensive but worth it. Just be sure to make a day of it and see everything. They have a great winery and gardens and that should be a great time to visit. I think the stables are open, but not sure anymore. It is truly America's castle. If you've ever watched Downton Abbey, that's the Biltmore.
Hope you have fun, and let us know. - crimmps49ExplorerThird on Bear Creek. We enjoyed our stay!
- falconbrotherExplorer IISecond on Bear Creek.
- Coyote74ExplorerBear creek CG , clean sites, cable, pull ins or back ins. pool, laundry a little pricey. Been there several times, close to Biltmore estates, actually can been seen from camp ground overlook. easy to get to. try the upper level away from road.

- 2_RetiredExplorerTry www.rvparkreviews.com for campers' reviews of many CGs near Asheville. This is the review I wrote for Rutledge Lake CG when we stayed there in 2010: First, must say we liked the campground. Sites were mostly level and gravel. They were a bit narrow, and not really deep. Two big rigs back to back is a real problem. Only a few pull thrus available. Big rig friendly, but not in all sites, for sure. New, big bathhouse and very nice pool. Camp store has very limited inventory, but Wal-Mart is very close. Staff is friendly and very attentive without being intrusive. Wi-Fi works well, even in the back of the campground, and is included in site fee. Ditto cable TV. Satellite TV might be a problem in some sites. CG is south of Asheville in a quiet area, but close enough to make it convenient to everything. Biggest problem is finding the CG. Road signs are difficult to find and the last turn off of Airport Road is difficult to find (remember, it's between the Sonic and IHOP!) Lake is definitely man-made, small and though there are rumors of fish, none were caught the week we were there! If sites were larger grade would be higher. We would not hesitate to return. We camped here in a 30' Travel Trailer.
- RoadpilotExplorerI would recommend either Mama Gerties or Campfire Lodgings. Both are great and get good reviews.
