Will pipes freeze camping in 26 deg.weather

We have had our class A 2004 Newmar Kountry Star 33' for a little over a year but have never camped in cold weather. We plan to start heading south very soon and the weather forecast for the first night is a low of 26 deg. We will be using the furnace. Is there any chance that the pluming in the motorhome will freeze? I think some people say that some of the heat from the furnace goes into the basement of the motorhome but I don't know if this is true. Busting our pipes on the first night of the trip would not be a good way to start. Thanks for your help.

  • It's unlikely anything will freeze as long as you're living in it and keep the interior temp up around 70 or so.

IMHO, the only thing that might be susceptible would be the sewer drain pipe under the coach. If it were me, I would just leave both valves open so there is not standing water in either of the waste tanks.

We have had several evenings where the temp dropped to the mid 20's and didn't do anything except disconnect the water hose. However different coaches may behave differently.
  • Just don't dewinterize until you hit warm weather. Drink bottled water and flush your toilet with Rv antifreeze.

Yes, that is the safest option, and that may be what we end up doing. The place that we are staying doesn't have showers, so we would like to use the motorhome shower.
  • If you are not winterized, fill your fresh water tank as it would take quite sometime for that much water to freeze. Only use water from that tank and leave your hose stored. Only dump the black tank when needed.

Twenty six degrees is not that bad and shouldn't freeze anything for just one night. If you find that you don't have a heating duct in the basement, connect a drop light in the bay to keep that area warm.

    Good luck,
    MM.
  • Why chance it, for one or two nights, use bottled water and rv antifreeze for flushing. A little inconvenience but a lot less than a broken pipe. That is what we do when heading south in the winter.
We dewinterize when we are far enough south to ensure no more freezing weather.

  • IF it's cold right now, turn on your furnace and put a cup of water in where the pipes are.
