Digital Meat Thermometer

I've used the ones from lowes with no problem.they are designed to be left in.no foil needed

I've got two. Different brands. I use them in my home oven, the grill, the Nu Wave oven and the TT oven. They seem ok with oven doors, tops of grill, etc. And the ones that I have are cheapies!

the braided wire is heat resistant and can be left in the meat during cooking. I have a wireless and I just come into the house and watch the remote. cost me $24 and worth it. I don't have to go out into the cold to check the meat. our turkey in the treager came out perfect. cooked until it hit 175* and brought it into the house and let it finish cooking to 180*

Thanks guys. Maybe I should have been a little more clear in my question. My concern is that the cable will be damaged at the point where the lid closes on it. It would be the cable pinched between the metal lid and the metal body of the smoker, both of which would be very hot.

I have used them the way you described but be aware none of them are very durable and it doesn't take much to damage them.

I use a Maverick remote wireless, primarily while smoking. That cord, as mentioned, is heat resistant, and pretty tough. I don't think you would have any problem with pinching it. I think they're pretty much designed for that.

I use a Maverick also. When shutting the lid just be careful and ease it down on the cable

Taylor makes a range of inexpensive digital ones you can leave the probe in while cooking. I bought mine a few years ago at Lowes and if I recall, it was under 20 bucks. Works fine. I use it with my Weber Smokey Mountain smoker all the time.

My $35 digital Williams Sonoma branded one never worked right. Hope they've redesigned them in the last three years.

I have 2 Polders, one of which is 16 years old and still ticking, and a Maverick remote. I've never had a problem with pinching in the 3 smokers I use them in. I do wrap the portion of the cable that crosses inside my Big Easy, but it gets really hot, smokers don't get that hot in the silicone world.
I would hate to smoke anything without a temperature probe other than ribs.

I've gotten my last 2 units from Amazon and they also have the Polder replacement probes, but they aren't cheap so it's best to take care of them.
