Eggs

We have been buying organic eggs. usually she buys Extra Large which is the old large Egg standard or it throws off receipts.
I have noted to her that the eggs don't seem to be any larger than perhaps a medium egg anymore, when she cooks breakfast.
Today at the Commissary I looked at the eggs. The large eggs and extra large were right next to each other. I took out a large egg from one carton and an extra large egg from another. The extra large egg had what looked like to small ends and was not standard. These usually are what is cracked and put into the large tanks of eggs supplied to bakeries and ice cream outfits etc. I took out another one and it was smaller than the large egg so I took out another large egg and another extra large egg and it was smaller than the first or second large egg, in both weight and side by side size comparison. I didn't have time to compare with Medium eggs.
So we have been getting ripped off regularly for extra large eggs that are not at several stores she shops at. The organic label? Ive had some that tasted like what Grand Ma raised but the the new Organics are not the same it seems to me.

    If an egg is 57 - 63g it is large. If it is 64 - 70g it is extra-large. One gram ain't a lot.

    We don't buy organic eggs, but we do buy hormone free and vegetarian fed. Chickens aren't necessarily vegetarian, but commercial growers can only feed vegetarian or a mix of meat scraps and grains.

    Old farmer told me that he only buys the cheapest no matter what the size. His reason was people eat 2 eggs for breakfast. Doesn't matter what size.

    Years ago they were packaged by size. When you opened up a carton of large eggs all were large and open up a jumbo carton of eggs and all were jumbo and the yolks inside proved it.

    They the fda allowed them to go to a weight system. 'Total weight' of eggs per carton.

    IMHO there is no longer any difference between regular size, large or extra large anymore the innards all look the same, other than the price.

    I can remember going to the farmer down the road and getting a dozen of the Jumbo size eggs and you couldn't close the cover on the carton. They had to put a tape over it to keep the eggs from falling out.

    BTW: This does 'not' mean 100% organic. It is the biggest hoax of all time from the USDA. :W

    Ditto! Some are so big they're beyond jumbo and won't fit in any carton. Some are so small (rare) that they look like a marble. But mostly they're about one notch under jumbo, on average.
    Our hens don't free range because we live in the woods and there are numerous predators, but they are cage free and have two covered, enclosed outdoor runs in addition to their stall in the barn. .
    Ever since I got breast and endometrial cancer, they've been on organic feed, and flax seed. And table scraps. They love fruit, veggies, and spaghetti.

    The same goes with ANGUS beef. My BIL raised 100% pure bread certified Angus beef. The Angus Assoc. said It only needed to be 50% Angus to qualify. Now it's almost to the point that if it's a black cow it's sold as Angus. If you have ever had pure Angus beef, you could sure tell the difference between the two.
