- dcb17bExplorer IIMy brother and I camped via scouts and church youth group during our childhood. During our 20's we did not camp but a weekend or two with friends. I met my wife(who's family always camped in the summer) and bought a tent, stove and lantern and took my new family camping. Her children were 4 and 6 when we met and loved camping with the dog and us. The kids are now 23 and 25 and still camp with us with their families. My grand daughter is 5 and she can't wait to camp with Nonnie and Poppy. As for my brother,he would stop by and visit while my family was camping. One weekend a few years ago,he and his wife stayed the night with us and by the next Wednesday they had bought a camper for themselves. We camp with my brother,my sister in law, mother in law and their families whenever we can and LOVE it. For me it is spending QUALITY time with family and being able to just relax and enjoy thier company.
- Opie431ExplorerWe camped when I was a child in a homemade pop-up trailer. My parents never took a picture of it but I do have a picture of my grandfather and his friends in front of their tent. I have been camping since 1947 that I can remember but we took a break and went on Eurporean vacations. We came back one year we went on a motel vacation to the Utah NPs. We saw little tents all over with people as old as we were, in their 50s. We bought a small tent and have been camping ever since. We have a TT now but still take a tent for our western vacations, six weeks at a time.
- tomkaren13ExplorerTent camped with 1st husband and four childern-Hated it. Had big old leaky tent- Hated it. Got a high top van to go with another tent,- Hated it. Kids had fun tho.
Fast forward,DH (second husband) decided becuse of health problem, my special diet we would buy a TT. Now I can'r wait to go camping. Don't know whether it is the TT or the company. - OaklevelExplorer1960s Dad wanted to travel to the west coast & camp out of our 63 Chevy Wagon (Mom wanted to stay in motels........ never camped..... Just in our yard.
1980s wanted to travel with the DW & kids (2 sons) did not like motels wanted to be outside..... bought 1st camper a $600 73 Terry fixer upper used it couple seasons & moved up to a new one & off from there....... Tent camped some with the boys during their Boy Scout years.........
DW & I still camping today with the boys & DIL (In their 20s) when they can..... they are grown & have taken our 3 month GS along with us already....... his first camping trip........ his second will be in a couple weeks.... - lfcjaspExplorerI grew up camping; hotels were too pricey I guess. Mom told us she hated camping, but she sure was good at it...go figure:?. That seemed to come to a halt when I (the oldest of four girls) started working every summer in my mid-teens.
We did some camping when our girls were little, but that also came to an end. We were mostly just going back and forth from VA to WA to visit my family.
Our two daughters did some camping with the Girl Scouts; I didn't go along...have no idea why.
Then DH and I got into Civil War reenacting. That meant an A tent, cooking over a fire, no electricity, carrying water from the water buffalo. We enjoyed it, even though we hated the summer heat and humidity. Eventually that started to get old as we got older.
One year to celebrate our anniversary we took a little trip, stayed in a very nice hotel...and later found bedbugs:o when we got home. That got me thinking maybe we needed to check into a camper.
So we started researching, asking questions. We got a really nice HTT, but never got to use it...long story. Then we got our motorhome. Now are addicted and can't stop;) - michigansandzilExplorerMy family never camped growing up and they still find the idea unappealing.
My husband and I started to tent camp when we were 20 and wanted to go across the state to ride dune buggies in the sand dunes. We were college students and too broke to afford a hotel.......so we asked for a tent as a wedding present and voila! Tent camping started for us.
It has just evolved as we realized how much we genuinely enjoy the lifestyle. We used a tent until baby #3 came along and we just couldn't 'fit' into a tent anymore. Got our first TT a few years ago and after only a year of that, we bought a brand new TT. This year we have 10 trips planned. Tenting was fine when it suited our lifestyle, but I seriously don't miss it at all. Love the TT. - Pop-Pop_CExplorerWe never started till our early 60's, . Lookers at RV'S for 8-10 years.
In our vacation travels always tried to get on water, be it river, lake or
Our favorite the ocean. Couldn't find rooms with a view or access very readily.
So, we jumped in with both feet , bought a 38' FRED. nothing against the engine
But had several issues with the coach part, when I retired went to a fiver and a Dooley.
Was good except hard to setup and back in.just went back to a MH. 40' pusher.
Good times. We are homeless and fulltime. Since retirement. No plans on
Quitting. Non RV'RS ask how long we are going to do this.
Standard answere is 'WHEN WE GET TIRED OF IT OR KILL ONE ANOTHER"!!!!!!! - Sillybugs2ExplorerMy parents bought a Minnie Winnebago when I was 2. We went for weeks every summer. My grand parents had a truck camper. We sold when I was ten. Dh grew up tent camping with his family. He also did extensive backpacking/hiking trips.
When we met our first trip was tent camping for a weekend. We also prekids did some backwoods camping/hiking. Kids came and we continued to tent camp. I wanted more comfort so we bought the TT on 2010. - tundraman67ExplorerMy dad had a wandering spirit so he liked to go see the world - the easiest way he knew how was to put a mattress in the back of his work van and a tent for us kids and take off - we never really knew where we were going. Later he bought a class C and adventured all over the US when we were out of school. He loved to take pictures and put them into slide shows - the first weekend after a trip he would invite friends over and show them the trip and tell them all the funny stories. I guess I inherited his wandering spirit and his love for the great outdoors. Miss those days....dad still has the spirit, but mom can't travel due to alzheimers.
- vkatzmanExplorerCamped with my family from the early 1950's. My earliest memory is my dad's army tent and canvas sleeping bags (can still recall that unique tent and canvas sleeping bag aroma) and hand-made fold-out kitchen, catching salmon on the Salmon River, and camping by many beautiful lakes in Idaho. Then there were always Saturday or Sunday (or sometimes overnight) picnics in the South Hills of Southern Idaho.
