HELP NEEDED giving large dog meds...

If you know me...you know Baby Girl is my baby...rescued as an 18 lb mistreated puppy, she is now 55 lbs and healthy...most of the time. Took her to the vet the other day for her yearly proactive physical and discovered an Urinary Tract Infection. One of the medications is a liquid in a syringe...that is where the problem is...suggestions on giving medication via a syringe into the mouth.

  • I've watched our vet stick the syringe under their cheek and squirt. The liquid seemed to cause a licking/slurping reflex.
  • I have 4 large picky dogs when it comes to meds.
I would take the syringe shoot it I to a Nyquil or similiar plastitc cup .Have a partner open their mouth and pour It in and close immediately.
Works all the time for us.
  • I've never needed the extra help, but I wonder if a little bit of peanut butter or some other tasty treat smeared then licked off the syringe. Or as someone else mentioned, first something tasty in the syringe then the meds. Maybe give the good stuff 10 or more times in a row at first to build a good association. Make the syringe a good thing.
  • Our toy poodle will not allow anything in her mouth without sniffing it first, I cannot teach her to catch treats in the air. I brace her head from the back with one hand and use my second finger and thumb at the base of her jaw to force her mouth open while my wife does the dirty deed.
  • You consider 55 lbs big? Try doing that to a dog that weighs 150 lbs! Have used Anaro's method with multiple dogs. That can also be done from the front, but doing so from the back causes the head to tilt back naturally. It sounds a bit rough but sometimes it's the only way. If you can get a helper, one can squirt the medicine as the other holds the mouth open.
  • my old dog was horrible about any kind of med. the best way to give a liquid with her (she was 70 lbs) was to have her sit, I stood behind her and reached around to the front. Pried the mouth open and squirted it in the back. close the mouth quickly and hold closed while lightly stroking the throat to induce a swallow response. one swallowed, give a treat. this was the only way I could give any kind of medicine to thAt dog, treats, pill pockets, peanut butter, cheese bread, canned food etc never worked for her. good luck.
  • Slice of bread with the meds on it and peanut butter. Break the bread into small pieces. This will work with cheese also.
