New to camping with a dog your advice?

Good suggestion. We used to have a very regal looking standard poodle who was always the hit of the campground. After about one too many comments to the effect of "I'd sure like to have a dog LIKE THAT" we decided we better micro-chip ol' Minky. Well, he has since passed and we recently acquired little bitty Tiki. We had him micro-chipped before we even left the pound.

Our first camping trip with Tiki was pretty good. We took him about 8 days after we got him. He wasn't house trained and he wanted to bark at people, but he actually did rather well, considering how traumatizd he was. We just made a point to stay away from people and other dogs when we were walking and we took his crate with us. He whined just a little the first night, but then he settled down.

I would only take my dog if I was going to be close to the campground all the time. Not if it was going to be a trip to an amusement park or some historical site. You won't know if the dog barks until you leave him for the first time. We got lucky with both our dogs. Neither of them barked inside the camper as long as we left the radio or TV on. In summer we leave the A/C on and a fan, with plenty of water available. That way we can go off for a little bit if we choose too. I always leave my cell phone number with nearby campers, so if the dog starts barking I can run back pretty quick.And I leave the door unlocked so someone could evacuate him, if they had to. I've never had to, but you don't know.

Good luck camping with the new pup. The biggest hurdle we had with both dogs was teaching them to go up the TT steps.

Yes, you have to clean up after them, but I guarantee that they enhance your camping enjoyment. Sometimes trouble, yes, but mostly not. We have never been turned away from a CG with our dogs.

We make concessions for our dogs, yes, but their love is worth it. I would rather associate with them than a lot of people that I've met.

Be patient. Teach him not to bark (important for your neighbors)and introduce him to anything and everything.
He'll adjust to camping perfectly. Just remember, as long as he's with his family, he's happy. Besides, it looks like he won't take up much room at all.

Last year was Duncan's first time camping and he was awesome. We have a TC and share it with a weimaraner and a cavalier. They are wonderful campers. They just think our TC is a different house. No big deal.

You should have no problems with him traveling. I would however spend some time with him in the RV, maybe even spend the night before your trip so he can get used to it and it won't be something new to him. Take things from home so that he has something that's his and familiar to him.

I don't understand how your post is meant to help with the OP's question. Are you suggesting that they should get rid of the dog, because he will be too much trouble?

Here is some more:

With such a small dog, be very careful of loose dogs as they could do a lot of damage to him/her in a heartbeat.

Also look out for birds of prey. They can and have, in the past, grabbed small dogs. Keep him on a leash always.

We're going to Prairie Creek. I hear Gunter Hill is really nice since they reopened the renovated old section but haven't gotten down there.

We just started RVing. Our experience is that the campgrounds check to see if you have a pet, if you don't they give you one! lol;) We have always taken our dog. You have gotten the necessary information. If you can crate train it is always good camping or not. We don't leave the campgrounds much, if you plan to leave for most of the day that could be a problem. All campgrounds we have visited have pet rules, check the rules before you go! Traveling with our dog is one of the advantages of RVing. Good luck and happy camping.
