Papers needed to cross into Canada with 2 dogs?

I did this once before a long time ago but want to make sure there are no problems. I know my vet can give me papers for my 2 dogs to cross into Canada from the US. I was told the papers are only good for 10 days. If I leave Miami on my rv stopping here and there to enjoy different areas I cannot make Canada in 10 days. What about coming back into the US? Are those papers still good? I tried calling USDA but can't reach them. Any suggestions?

  • We have crossed into and out of Canada with our cat on several occasions and have always had the certificate of health and separate rabies record. This was when the certificate was only good for ten days. We have never been asked for them but did talk to CA board officer and he told us that he felt that no one should be required to get a new cert every time they crossed. It took us more than ten days to cross from Montana to Tok in AK and we would have to get another cert as we went in and out of Canada several times.

I hope this makes sense to you, but, it would have required a cert from our Vet, a second cert before leaving the USA due to stopping a few more places than we had planned, and then when leaving Haines going Dawson City. We didn't follow our original plan of straight through travel because we encountered so many glorious places we didn't do it in 10 days.

The Customs Officers know that ten days doesn't make sense and don't apply the ten or evidently now 30 day rule.

I don't know why it is 30 days, I don't care why, I just get one from the Vet to show good faith.
  • We traveled into Canada last year with 3 dogs. Going into Canada they didn't ask, it was coming back into the US when they ask if we had all the paperwork on the dogs. We just said yes, we had all the paperwork and we were waved forward. No problems.
  • Papers are good for 30 days, not 10. According to the new Canadian rules, all you need is proof of rabies vac. but not all customs agents know this.

Of all my trips to Canada, I've only been asked once for pet papers (and it's obvious I have dogs, one rides in the front passenger seat), and that was just for rabies.
  • Went last year, both sides asked for the rabies certs for all 9 dogs

For what it's worth, we do carry health certificates along with the shot records; but no one seems to care about the health certificates.

Been going to Canada for years. Always had papers - never been asked.

That said - I would NEVER go into Canada with out the papers. I would not want myself or my pets to have to deal with consequences.

We make sure all vaccines are up to date and request a printed document from our vet.

As far as I know this document is good as long as it is within the the vaccines dates listed in the document.

  • Every vet I've ever had has given me a signed certificate of good health, as well as the rabies certificate. Of course, this is just confirmation that your pet has had the annual check up.

Carry pet food in the original container. Use a kind of pet food you can buy in either country. Both countries do confiscate your pet food, when they say conditions call for it. ie. bird flu or such.

  • Our dog always sits right up front on the arm rest where she can be easily seen. We crossed into Canada and back twice last year on a 2 month trip. Two years back we also went on a 2 month trip crossing into Canada. Not once have we ever been questioned about our dog, including one time when the Canadians spent over 45 minutes going through our RV.
We always carry proof of rabies shot and the usual yearly check ups.
  • Proof of rabies vaccinarion is all you should need. Check the CDN customs web site for what pet foods are banned.
