I am not partial to either cats or dogs, we have both, and a parrot too (who is by far the smartest pet), it is just that I recognize that each species has unique qualities. As someone who loves animals, I am going to stand up for them when someone wrongly besmirches an entire species. - DashonthedashExplorer

Dogs can also be nurturing. My Molly has made it her personal job to comfort me or any of the other dogs if any of us are sick or hurt. Dogs also like to travel more than cats, because cats tend to be more territorial (attached to their home), while dogs tend to be more attached to their human. There are exceptions, of course, on both sides, as there are plenty of RVing cats and stay-at-home dogs. - DashonthedashExplorer

Dogs can train people, too.
GSDs and greyhounds seem to be especially good at training people.
I seem to be attracted to both breeds.

A dog will say, "Throw my ball! Feed me! Let's go for a walk! Feed me! Why are you staying in bed? The sun is up already! I hafta potty! Did I mention I'm hungry?" :E - Dog_FolksExplorerOh Boy! A fight between dog people and cat people.

While cats have a much better sense of smell than humans, they don't have anywhere near what a dog does, and they don't hunt primarily by scent, as dogs do. Their size keeps them from running down bad guys or doing SAR work-- just as it keeps smaller dogs from doing these things, but there are countless stories of cats protecting their people, waking them up to danger, alerting them that something is wrong, and even attacking intruders.
My cat will play fetch with her milk carton ring. When her people come home she runs to greet us, she loves us and we love her. She is far more useful than the medium sized rescue dog that we have that is, frankly, a leech who does little other than being a companion for the large dog. - NRALIFRExplorer"Lets see you herd sheep with cats."

Maybe, but the leech purrs, and buries it's own waste. The companion slobbers, depends on you to pick up it's poop and is known to occasionally eat it (which isn't usually considered a sign of intelligence).
"Never seen a cat in the back of a cop car to go after the bad guys.
Never seen a bomb sniffing cat.
Never seen a rescue team with a cat."
It's all about motivation. These are all dangerous activities that don't benefit the cat. Make it worth their while and they'll do it.
