- downtheroadExplorerExcellent post rwbradley, and I completely agree with him.
I only posted the 'disable updates' link for those who seem SO WORRIED about loosing control over this..
I have been running W-10 for 3 weeks now. It has worked perfectly. I really like a whole bunch of stuff about it and dislike very little.
(takes a day or so to tweak so that it looks and performs the way you want but it is very versatile and easy to modify.) - rwbradleyExplorerThere is a reason MS is making it harder and harder to do things like this... to protect users from themselves. Don't disable Windows Updates. That is like saying lets all stop going to the dentist because the fluoride treatment may cause cancer or don't changing the oil on your cars because you are adding more oil into landfill or don't get vaccinations because they may cause Autism.
If you are concerned about bandwidth usage on Windows 8 o 10 on a Cell Hotspot, google "Metered WIFI". Setting it as a Metered Connection will "Pause" windows updates and other features that are bandwidth hungry to conserve usage on a slow or capped internet. When you get home or login at a Starbucks the updates will resume.
The important part is that updates are there to protect you, for the number of things they protect you from they very rarely ever cause new problems. Just like the anti-vaxers, one kid gets sick from a vaccine and they think there is a conspiracy. Updates do have issues from time to time but in real terms it is one in every 1000 and every update fixes 1 to a dozen critical flaws that could allow you to be hacked. You are of course entitled to do as you wish but ask yourself, do you want to prevent that one bad update over the life of your computer or protect yourself from 10,000 flaws that can be exploited.
This logic of course applies to all updates Adobe, Apple, Android etc. - WyoTravelerExplorerI suspect if I really needed W10 I would upgrade. Maybe if my time was so valuable I had be up and running in 5 seconds that would be a plus. I can certainly see how a company would need W10. For us rural people that don't live in the fast paced urban areas doubt W10 is that important. I guess the major disadvantage of W10 is it is up in 5 seconds. Then I connect to my ATT Sierra or Verizon Jetpack module, open my internet and wait for all my W10 upgrades before I can read and answer emails or make an Amazon purchase. Like buying a fancy fast sports car to go to town in the winter then sit in a ditch while all the slow 4WD vehicles pass me by and get the job done. :B
- MrWizardModeratorcoming out of sleep mode on my 8.1 is almost instant just a couple of seconds
HOWever coming out of Hibernation takes longer
sleep and Hibernation are two different things
and your PC is still using power during sleep, and might even being doing things you don't know about
all sleep does is blank the screen and pause user opened programs/windows
background processes keep operating - road-runnerExplorer IIIHere's another tool claiming to control Windows 10 data harvesting and updates. I don't run Win 10 so won't be trying it myself.

"W10 opens vastly faster than older versions - for my W10 machine to come out of sleep to fully operational is under 5 seconds"
Just timed my XP laptop: 3-1/2 seconds. - joebedfordNomad IIW10 opens vastly faster than older versions - for my W10 machine to come out of sleep to fully operational is under 5 seconds.
Waiting for "all the bugs (to be) worked out" is going to be a forever wait. W10 works fine already.
I've never played it but FreeCell IS available as part of Microsoft Solitaire Collection under W10.
I still haven't figured out which program causes a BSOD at 2:21pm every day. - Golden_HVACExplorerHI,
Knowing how many 'bugs' are in new programs, I have not upgraded to Windows 10 yet. I don't know if I ever will. It seems like the older versions of Windows used less memory, and as such will open quicker. Also as more users start running programs, a 'fix' or update for each glitch is developed, some updates will cause problems with other programs, and require an updated fix!
I think if I ever do upgrade to Windows 10, all the bugs should be worked out in 1 year, so a 'good' version of Win 10 will be available then, with all the updates already completed.
I still miss the screen of my last version of Windows. Now when I am scrolling side to side - I get a option to shut down the computer. This happens all to frequent, more than 3 times a minute in some cases, and many times also will change from the game that I am playing online to 'desktop'. I don't want desktop!
I also like playing games that are not online, like the microsoft preloaded game of Free Cell. They do not offer this game anymore. Sad.
Fred. - TucsonJimExplorer IIWhy would you want to do that? According to your link, here are three reasons why:
•If your net bandwidth is limited
•If you don't need windows updates at all
•If the updates cause activators not work in your PC
Other than the bandwidth concern, the amount of users who fall into the other two categories would be very limited. - Us_out_WestExplorerYou first...your link.
