I've used Windows since version 1.0. How come I don't encounter these popups and sneaky Windows?
Hershey, please expand as I have never experienced it either and am curious as to what you are referencing. - hersheyExplorer

I've used Windows since version 1.0. How come I don't encounter these popups and sneaky Windows? - hersheyExplorerI've been a Mac user for about the last 4 years. I suddenly found that I needed Windows for a particular application not available in Mac. I partitioned the HD and loaded Windows. I can't believe the massive amount of updating, popups, very sneaky windows to lead you into other Windows programs that I don't want. What a cluttered up mess. I don't remember Windows as being such a cluttered mess in years past. There has to be something that other Windows users are doing to be able to navigate in the Windows environment.

I just finished installing the 8.1 update over the weekend. IMHO it is worth it, Microsoft finally gave the consumer what they want, an updated OS that doesn't require you to relearn everything. It goes back to the windows interface we have used for the past decade or so, of course if you really like having to swipe thru pages to try and find the desktop and traditional icons, then this was right up your alley. I think most people never liked the 8.0 interface and for the first time in history MS listened, 8.1 boots into the traditional desktop and if you really do like the swipe style start screen from 8.0 the icon is right there where the old start button used to be.
It took more than 3 hours to do the whole update with multiple restarts and the download is about 1.2GB. But to me it was worth it. You did have to install all the updates available to 8.0 before installing 8.1, then just go to either the microsoft website or the the windows store and you can get the update there. Good luck!
Win 8.1, by default, still boots to the Start screen but can be configured to boot straight to the desktop. The Win 10 Technical Preview which is available to download and try out actually boots straight to the desktop and now has a Start button. It can be configured to use the Start screen instead for those that prefer it. - whjcoExplorerI'm an IT professional. Get connected to a good WIFI connection and do the Windows 8.1 upgrade. It will bring back some semblance of the Start button plus many improvements. Note that it is a large download and will take about 1 - 2 hours.

Windows 8.1 Update is a cumulative set of security updates, critical updates and updates. You must install Windows 8.1 Update to ensure that your computer can continue to receive future Windows Updates, including security updates. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

- Triker33ExplorerMine finally quit giving that notice. And now I was wanting to update. And no longer get it. :(
