Just how much damage will I do to my speakers or DVD

How bad is it to hook a surround sound receiver that came with 3 ohm speakers to the 6 ohm speakers that are built into my MH?
  • Thanks. We are old so we don't crank the sound up, especially in the close confines of the RV. We also have hearing issues, so fidelity is lost on us anyway.

As stated no damage, Some loss of power. Possibly some loss of fidelity at either high or low frequency (I forget which).

With solid state amplifiers such as the ones in your RV, some years ago they started making them very low impedeance out,, That way you could use 4, 8, or 16 ohm speakers and all you really lost was power.

So using 6 ohm speakers on a 3-ohm amp.. NO PROBLEM.

    The reverse. may cause problems.
  • Should not do any damage as long as you do not run wide open, then you my run a risk. :)
  • Twice as much impedance (3 vs 6) means half as much current will flow so less power available. Whether the sound output is lower volume or not depends on the efficiency of the speakers.

For the most part, you should be fine but your amplifier will need to work harder.
  • 6 ohms is less of a load than 3 ohms so no damage will occur.
  • It won't do any damage, but your audio output will be reduced. Depending on the speakers, fidelity may be effected as well.
