looking for a new laptop gps anyone?

I was going to look for a new laptop and get off the tablet I mostly use now, Going full time in the near future makes keeping the desktop unit impractical.
With Amazon, Bestbuy and Helmart all holding Black friday in July sales tomorrow , I wanted to ask for recommendations on any which have or can have a gps card installed.
I think there are also some gps dongle units which may be useful. If anyone is using one, I would love a comment on its ease of use and quality.
While GPS is in most every phone and tablet, it appears to be missing from most laptops.
Trying to stay with these specs as a minimum
$400 price point
4 gig ram
500g HDD
1 optical drive
3 usb ports,
Radeon R4 or equivalent
15.6" screen
Or should I give up the HDD and opt for multiple SDD with maybe 64 or 128 G built in?
  • I have a 10" Windows 10 tablet with removable keyboard that I purchased at Walmart for $100 a couple of years ago. It has 2GB of memory and 32GB of storage. I run Microsoft Streets & Trips on it. I also play music and audio books. My hotspot which is a MiFi 6620L has GPS built in and has a feature called GPS via WiFi. My tablet connects to that over the WiFi connection. I mount the tablet in a cup-holder on the console and plug the audio into my radio. It is my navigation and entertainment center. You don't need a massive amount of memory for Windows 10. My tablet boots up quickly and performs great. I have no problem running Streets & Trips and playing music at the same time.
  • My personal recommendation would be that you find a nice 7-10" tablet and run Google Maps as your GPS and have a separate device for gaming, video editing and the web. You don't gain anything with a larger screen over a 7-10" tablet and they are very inexpensive and easy to use and mount on the windshield or dash. Not all have a true GPS module so be sure you get one that does. As a full timer who has pretty much tried them all, I have had the most success with the setup I describe above.
Are you going to be using an internet connection for your gaming? If so, have you considered how you are going to do that? Most camp grounds don't allow it and/or are not capable of handling it.

First things first. I am wondering why you want a gps with a 15 inch screen? It is easy to find a gps with a 6 inch screen.
And yes more memory is necessary, 12 or 16 gb would be great. A SSD of 256 gb would be sufficient and a second internal drive rather than an external drive is more convenient than an external one but either one is mandatory.

If at a campsite, and looking for others in the area, I had thought it would be easier to use the same device for scouting the area roads on google maps or other programs for our next move. I Have a 5.5" moto G and a 10" android tablet, and can use either, but the ease of only needing one device from the table was the goal, also could see more detail hopefully.
15" laptop mainly for low level video editing and casual gaming or web surfing. Laptops I was looking at were almost all 4gb but upgradable to 8 or 16.

  • Have been using android tablets but wanted to combine for travel my games (GalCivIII and similar)and something capable of basic video editing., so we could document our travels and maybe post a few you tube video's as a hobby. Assuming I will need a HD type video driver to edit.
Wasn't sure about using something with a SDD for larger games like that, will they still run?
I know I can use the thumbdrives for video storage.

Had thought about the GPS for campsite use for planning next stop, thought it would make it easier to use google maps to locate where we were, and nearby roads etc. But found quite a few dongles if needed or can use the tablet for that.
    Something like this.

  • There are a number of fine tablets that have usb ports that you could use to attach portable hard drives etc. Going full time unless you absolutely must havemI personally would stick with a tablet and add a bluetooth keyboard.
  • You are correct, you won't find GPS in a laptop. There are a lot of nice tablets out there, with GPS, that have attachable/detachable keyboards, but they are smaller than a 15" screen. You can buy a USB based GPS antenna and the use some double stick tape and Velcro to attach it to the cover of your laptop

4GB of RAM is NOT enough to run Windows 10 efficiently. Fine for Linux. And forget about $400 unless you can find a used one (off lease). Skip the optical drive (get one that plugs into a USB port). While you probably won't find a laptop configured with a SSD, this is the best investment you can make ! Install a 256 GB SSD (Samsung EVO Pro) and buy an external drive housing for the drive you remove.

Anyone who knows the right end of a screwdriver can swap in a SSD. Just take your time.
