Need Opinions for getting internet provider / hotspot

Everything is done over the Internet these days..

I Have a "Straight talk" cheepie contract at WM, with a Samsung S4 which does NOT have hotspot ability on it.

Not really sure what I need, But I do know when Camping some places I go do not have good internet service / WIFI, and I end up driving up my data use.

I think, maybe a dish net? hughsnet? change phone provider and pay more for a hotspot? TV is not the driver, I would like to be able to see the internet and google my next camping experience.

Thank You,
Please advise me.. I can work a hammer,a pipe wrench, & a Oil can Spout. Not this IT stuff...

I have had excellent service using the VERIZON MIFI HOTSPOT which is secured with password etc. Mine is old and needs updated and doesn't have but 3GB dataplan per month. It also has a slow throughput speed. It works fine for us as we only want to check in with the kids, pay a few bills, and sometimes do a minimal search on the internet.

You will need many GB's per month data plan if you are wanting to downstream TV programs or movies. I think the rule of thumb for these are something like a GB per hour of use.

The MIFI is a hotspot for up to five of our devices...

I also have a hotspot on my cell phone but when I am on it my cell phone is tied up. It too is old and I think the newer cellphones don't have this problem...

We do alot of OFF-ROAD camping not near the Interstates and Verizon always comes thru for us... Learned this the hard way when in my working years... Only Verizon would work the best in the far away places away from the large metropolitan areas...

  • 2Oldman is correct.

We've tried many other opportunities and found that our Verizon SamsungG5's have hotspot ability and have never had a problem.

We purchased used/factory refurbished unlocked SamsungG5's which are a very nice phone with more ability than I have!

Reliability and simplicity. Cost slightly more. Nope...I am not a rep for Vz.
  • Go to both Verizon and ATT. They each have what you want. I've used both
I use my phone as a hot spot and I also have a wifi amplifier and router so I'm covered both ways
  • AT&T Unity hotspot with Mobile Shared Data Plan. All of your devices share the data pool in this plan. There is a limit (which you choose) but only music and video are throttled at the limit. Essentially unlimited data otherwise.
  • Depending on how remote you camp, most people opt for Verizon for cell and internet because of their outstanding coverage. With VZW you can opt for either a mifi card or simply use your smart phone hot spot.
Mifi requires a seperate phone number and associated costs. Phone hot spot does not.
  • Guess we are in the same boat in that we use or smart phone to get on the internet and always go over our allotted minutes/bytes when we are in Florida for the month of January when we use it every day.
  • Verizon, smartphone. Only way to go. Yes, it's more expensive. Yes, it works almost everywhere. No, you won't get the 'same' thing for less.

    That doesn't make sense.
