Transfer Files? Odd blanks in some files

I just bought a new laptop (Toshiba w/WDW8)and I transferred some folders and files from the old laptop, via a external back-up HD, which holds all my folders - I always back-up my folders and files to it.

I have MSWord 2004 version too, and installed it on the new laptop - it asked me to 'buy' the Word 2013 version, (and lots of other stuff) which I declined.

But, when I transferred the folders, some folders are empty. Blank, nothing inside

And, some folders contain world files that open perfectly now. And some folders open and some files show the blue square word symbol, and those files open fine, perfect.

Some word files in the same folder have a RED odd shape icon and when I try to open that one, it comes up with a window that says, "you're trying to open a MSW 2013 file but you don't have MSW 2013 on the PC." Well, true enough, but I've never had MSW 2013, so could not have created a MSW 2013 file. It's pretty random, maybe 10% of the files in one folder have this odd icon, and pretend to be MSW 2013 ...

Anyone have a clue? I can open all files if I click on it in the back-up drive, but the transfer somehow emptied some folders, and somehow 'converted' some word files to MSW 2013 during the transfer which I don't have on the PC.

Not very tech-bright Monkey here, but this is too weird even for me.

  • Thank you for the reply. I suspected you had not installed the version first.

Go work. Pictures will work with any program. If you install your previous program it should work too.

    Yes, solved the problem:
As it turns out, apparently the new MSWord 2013 temp must convert to it from other Word programs if no other word program is active.

SO, as I had test opened these files first, before installing '07 Word, it converted them.

Later, I installed 07 MSWord, then transferred other word files, which then loaded on the HD as the original. So now, all the word files transfer as older versions and save that way, and live on the HD that way too.

So, if I buy 2013 Word, I'll re-save all in new program, but the old version works fine as best I can tell. In the future, I'll know to install programs first, THEN transfer data.

Interesting too, but probably makes sense: The photo files transferred easily, and open with anything. But I'm guessing that's due to .jpeg and .tiff programs build in a common file format, and not proprietary format like MSWord programs.

Once again, RV.net tech gurus come to the rescue -

BTW: I mentioned in another thread too - the continuous updating of some 'app tiles' in WDW8 wil drain your data usage if you leave them on when you have WDW8 ... so, I went through almost 50% of my dat allowance (5GB) in two days. Once I shut them off, then the data drain went back to my normal .10GB per day.

So, if anyone is on a pay per data' hotspot, it will kill your allotment in a few days, so anyone that buys a new PC or LT with WDW8, makes sure the first thing you do it shut off the data drain and then operative it yourself, and not auto-update.

Not sure if I should put this info in a separate thread? But it should be known as lots of RV'ers use hotspots ... and the bill will be enormous if you miss this factor on WDW8 ... any comments?

I'm still playing with it - it appears that my old word programs will run on this WDW8 ... and when I transfer the files, I went from my older laptop to an external HD back-up, then to my new laptop. (The Ext HD is my back-up drive for all files).

I believe this is what happened:

I transferred a couple 'test files' to my new computer, and tried to open them. The new laptop "looks and finds" only the 'buy me' version of Word, so converts to it. But I don't have it activated and was not going to buy it if my old one works. SO, the conversion happened and I didn't know why - now, maybe I do.

So, I loaded the MSWord 2007 ... and it works. SO, now, when I transfer files, the files stay in the old Word version.

I believe that's what happens. Not positive yet, and I'm still bouncing around and learning things in WDW8 ... but it looks like I can delete the ones that 'upgrade' and re-transfer without a problem. We'll see and will let you all know.

I'm still figuring out all the 'stuff' in WDW8, but it looks like it doesn't matter which one I keep because once you figure it out (the learning curve) then it makes little difference.

Two things bum me out when a company (MS) changes my OS - one, I have to learn new stuff again and I'm pretty tech stupid so it take me a lot of time, and even then, am not sure I'm doing things the best and easiest way... but if it works, OK I use it. Second thing, not all programs work properly without some adjustment, and I get a little upset when I've bought one program already, it doesn't always work properly and I either have to buy it again (mini-extortion) or figure out if MS upgrades for free or gives a patch - and it's tough for me to figure it out because my tech knowledge is pretty minimal in the real work of "tech geeks" ... so I come here and get me fixed.

People here are very giving of time and expertise - and I always try to return the favor when I can on subjects I know about.

And the problem now always: Call a local tech guy for a simple Q, and it's never - one second answer - easy, "Do X" - and gain a customer when the time comes for real tech stuff. Instead, even for the simplest answer, its always "bring it in for a $79.95 consult". And often the answer is worth $4.00 or less of real time.

SO, yes, it seems to be working, although this new Toshiba is slower opening programs than the two year old Dell it replaced, once the program is open, Toshiba's faster than the Dell. I think that time factor opening may be due to 'converting time' from an old program version to a new one in this OS each time I open it - but, what do I know, not much. :) :)

  • My Asus i7, 8-core computer, purchased 2 years ago, came with a "free-be" version of Word and Excel (they have ads). They also had a current version to pay for, or to decline.

Those empty folders for word 2013 most likely already existed on your new computer.

How did you transfer your old folders for Word documents to your new computer?
Did you "copy" from old and "paste" into the new computer?

If you used a program to transfer files from old to new computer, it may have converted old Word files to be compatible with Word2013. They expect everyone to get the new Word program.

The old one you transferred over may not function properly in Windows8. Does your computer have the free version of Word (with ads)? If yes, open it and try it on your word documents.

If you have saved your folder for Word documents on a DVD disc, or a USB drive, from your old computer, you could plug them into the new computer and open them with your old Word program if it functions on the new computer. Data stored that way do not change when used on a different computer, unless someone modifies them and saves the change to the DVD or USB drive.

I assume you labeled your folders for documents on the old computer. Check each folder there on the old computer to insure the documents exist in them. If they are missing the problems you experienced on old computer caused the missing files.
  • It actually looks like it converted some files to "word 2013" and now I can't open them (I still have originals though) but I'm bummed that it converts them to a program I don't even own.

Will try to open it with 2004, or I think we have a 2007 in the house too.
  • I wonder if some of the file extensions on your new laptop are mapped to 2013. I haven't played with Win 8 so not sure if it's still there, but if you right-click on the "red icon" files and do an "Open With..." and use your Word 2004 can you read the file?

Just wondering if the pattern might be something like DOC files are ok but DOCX point to 2013 or something similar. Something is telling Windows to look for Word 2013 and then it's not finding it as it's not installed. That's usually set in the File Extension mapping.
  • Yes, it's all word files - documents. I transferred from the HD back-up from my dead laptop (not really dead, just replaced) and the files are in the old laptop and the HD back-up, but some folders are empty, and some files are "MSW 2013" and I can't open them - and I've never owned MSW 2013. Some files in each folder are fine, can open and they are what it should be, but other word files in the same folder is says are MSW 2013, which is impossible.

    Very odd...
  • Do you KNOW what is supposed to be in those empty files? Just curious if you ALSO got a version that DOES work or if something is actually MISSING.
