Valarm temp sensor

Wondering if anyone has used the Valarm temp sensor and app set up to monitor temp for Pets left in TT.

There's a video on bottom half of page that shows the set-up and android app. All in all, it looks like a good inexpensive way to set up remote monitoring.

This seems a lot to go through + Android-only doesn't seem like a selling point.

I opted for a LaCrosse Alerts system -- it can connect to any hotspot, temp/humidity data is accessed via any web browser, and high/low temps, etc notifications can be sent via SMS or email.

For visual/sound monitoring, I use a couple of CloudCams.

I haven't yet come to a conclusion on this yet, just testing things out. I like several things, the app is cheap - $11, the sensor is cheap - $39 for temp. (not sure about others). I like that I can monitor movement, sound etc. as well as temp all in one app/product. I can use wifi or cell connection. Not sure being only Android is a problem especially if you would be adding an additional phone for this you can get whatever inexpensive phone that works. For me, as long as it isn't iPhone I'm happy.

I've looked at several solutions and again not sold on any ONE yet. Just figure I might as well have fun testing this and see if can work as an option. Oh yeah, you can get a geiger counter module for when the nuclear winter sets in ;)

Can the sensor connect to anything besides an Android device?

App is Android only and Phone must be capable of USB OTG (On the Go)to utilize external sensors. Just found out my Galaxy S3 Mini doesn't handle OTG so will try backup Sony Xperia. The Galaxy S3 and other full-size Samsung devices seem to all have OTG.

  • Quick update on Valarm. I've loaded the app onto the Galaxy S3 mini. Didn't have the Temp sensor at first but the app does have setting for internal phone sensors (Motion, Shock, light, Sound). With the dogs I was interested in picking up if they were barking. You can set to email, text or both if an alarm is triggered. For sound, you can also record for a period of time after the alarm is triggered. A bit of testing trial and error but I really like this feature. After some playing around with settings I've tested on several trips out (house not RV). Works great, if the dogs bark, I get notified. Once back, I can check the saved sound files to hear what was really going on. So, an occasional single bark and every now and then both barking at something (kids across street or loud truck passing).
Will follow up more as I continue testing. Overall, I like the app. Lots of setting and potential sensors. I'm a bit of a techie so enjoy having lots of control over something like this.
  • Well, since I didn't get any responses to this, I have to assume no one has used this product. I've researched Valarm and the sensor provider and this looks like a pretty inexpensive way to monitor pets or anything while away. I've ordered the temp. sensor, found a cheap Samsung galaxy S3 mini on ebay. SO $55 for the hardware and I think $11.00 for the app. I'll have what I hope is a decent way to keep an eye on dogs when away. The app allows sound notifications and can turn on video (nice if they start barking or someone is banging around outside). Not counting the phone and wireless plan ($100 phone, $15 add to plan), every product I've seen requires a phone of some sort to send messages. Will update post when I have everything in and have tested the set-up.
