Buying an RV and dealer question/pricing

Found what we want, Livinlite VRV 7x20 and the local dealer right up the road is quoting me $5k more than what I have found online that I can get shipped to me. So about $4k more after shipping.

The local dealer says if I buy non-local that they can't do the warranty work if if has problems.

This doesn't seem right.

Is he being upfront here?

  • It is a relatively common position for a dealer to take especially when it is a customer and rig they were negotiating on. Another important consideration is problems that arise after deliver that should have been covered by the selling dealer's PDI. Things like rattles, squeaks, mis-aligned doors, scratches etc. etc. etc. The only dealer that is going to work on those issues will be the selling dealer. If they are 1000 miles away, or are nothing but a website, you will be completely out of luck on those issues since the selling dealer is paid to perform that PDI and it is not covered under any warranty.
As an Aside, I have never had any problems getting warranty work done if my address showed I was out of the trade area where I needed the work done.

I'd be more concerned how legit an offer on line that will SHIP it to you is. NOT!

THAT has ALL the red flags of a scam. You send money up front to ship.....the Nigerian scammer pockets the money and you have no TT.

You won't have to worry about non-local warranty work because you will have been scammed and out money and have no TT. :W

Seriously be VERY CAREFUL about buying on line RV's when it involves shipping.

your first problem is that there are very few Livin'Lite dealers, as they are a small volume manufacturer. really a niche market.
so that makes them way more expensive that similar sized trailers.
and yes, they can refuse to do warranty work, because the RV industry doesn't work like the Auto industry.
but most manufacturers will allow you to have warranty work done at an independent RV shop, IF you get pre-approval from the manufacturer and are willing to pay up front and wait for the reimbursement.

but i'd call the company, since they are a small one and ask them what your options are. also might inform them about this local dealer's attitude. it's not that they "can't" do the warranty work, it's that they "won't" do it.
  • We bought from RV Wholesalers. Check to see if you have an good independant RV Tech in the area that will do any warranty work for you. We found one here after being ripped off by the local large RV dealer on "extra charges" on warranty work.
  • I assume you have made the local dealer an offer closer to what you can get the online one?
  • Most places will only do warranty work if your their customer. I had the same problem.. My dealer over 100 miles away and one that was 25 miles away and they would not help me.I had to drive it to my dealer. I just don't do any business with the one that refused me. I will order parts online before I stop there and buy it from them.
  • RV dealers unlike automotive dealers are not required by all mfg. to preform warranty work.
Some mfg. let dealers get away with not doing warranty work.

Contact mfg. directly and ask them what there position is on warranty work.
Then discuss with them the local dealers response.

Local dealer may be blowing smoke but with that kind of strong-arm tactic the work preformed is not going to be very good.

If dealer told me that I would question their after sale commitment even if I bought from them

Most mfgs leave it up to the dealer whether or not they want to do warranty work on a unit not purchased from them so it comes down to how important warranty support is to you I guess.
