Disinfecting Water Connections

I just purchased a new TT and haven't used it yet. I know I have two available water intakes.

With the city water connection, do I need to disinfect it and the kitchen and bath faucets? If so, how? I also have a Watts pressure reducing valve and a two canister water filter system that I will use when on city water.

I have a 51 gal fresh water tank. How do I disinfect? How much water do I need to use to fill and flush the tank? What type of bleach can I use? Regular laundry bleach? What is the ratio of bleach to water? How do you add the bleach to the tank? Is there a special valve or filler that I need to use. How long do I need the bleach/water in the tank before flushing?

I have a brand new water hose. It too has never been used. I am thinking that the hose should also be disinfected? How? Suggestions? I will connect the male to female ends of the hose together after the hose is disinfected to prevent contamination after cleaning.

How often will I need to disinfect during the camping season?

I have read that when making the hose connection to the city water I should use a bleach/water solution in a spray bottle to sanitize the hose bibb. In addition, I should use a fresh solution since the bleach will lose its effectiveness over time.

Thanks.

  • I saw a picture of a deer licking a water faucet in a camp ground once. the poster said this is why he uses a spray bottle with bleach in it to spray on the faucet before he does any hook ups
  • I have RV for over 45 years and I have never sanitized the water system.

Well, I take that back; I put a cap of this stuff in the fresh water tank once in a while and call it good.

As far as bleaching the hose bibs with bleach and all of that, no. I have never gotten sick on vacation either. And yes, you will hear people come on here and talk about dogs peeing on the hose bibs and all of that. Big deal, wash the spiders out of the valve and call it good.

Do what you feel comfortable with and call it good. No need to over think this.

But don't listen to me. I used to drink out of the garden hose when I was small. :B
  • I sanitize the water system each year before the season starts (Google "sanitize rv fresh water") .. I sanitize all the fittings and, the hose by putting it in a bucket with the same solution. I do this just once. Not overly concerned about being germ free. This is the minimum. I don't do this to all my house pipes, so even this might be overkill.

I connect the ends of the hose together, but I don't sanitize it more than once per year.
  • I usually let a post like this go without responding but this time I just can't. If you have that many concerns about germs, don't even leave your house. Maybe think about living in a "bubble". All of those things you mentioned are unnecessary. Just go camping in your new trailer and enjoy life. For healthy people, exposure to all those normal germs keeps our immune system strong.
