sewer connections

When I hookup to park sewer do I open any of the valves?
  • Leave both valves closed(black and grey tanks)...

Depending on how long you are staying somewhere will depend on when you drain the tanks.

You want to keep an eye on your grey tank levels as they will fill fast if showering or doing lots of dishes.

If I am showering I usually open the grey tank prior to....

but you want to have plenty of grey water to rinse your sewer hose after emptying the black tank if you are leaving soon.....

Use lots of water when using the toilet as it will keep solids from forming in the tank from tissue....also will break down solids easier.
  • Good question.

On the "black" tank, you should only open it when you are ready to dump the contents. If you leave the valve open, two things can happen. The first is that foul odors from the sewer can make their way into your coach. The second is that solid items such as poo and TP can dry on the bottom of the tank and cause a plug.

On the gray tank, some people leave the valve open until the day before they leave. This will allow some liquid to accumulate so you can flush it out better. Personally, I leave them closed.

Here's the order I dump in:

    1. Black tank until completely empty.
    2. Gray tank for kitchen until completely empty.
    3. Gray tank for Bath until empty.

By doing this, the gray tanks will flush your sewer hose (some people call it the "stinky slinky") and get out most of the yucky stuff from the black tank.
