- Roundtwo-40ExplorerAnd why is the great state of Chicago er Illinois not on the list? We are broke, everyone on welfare moved here from WI when they limited their welfare system,All our Govenors go to prison. Yeah we have a lower tax but did I mention WE ARE BROKE? I live here because it is where I was born and have family. If I was throwing darts at a map for a place to move and it hit IL I would throw another dart..
- SRTExplorerWe live in Minnesota and have retired here. Moved from the Twin Cities to near Duluth to be near the grand kids. Yes, we pay income tax and sales tax. Plus property taxes have inched up. Minnesota is a blue state and shows it. But our house and property are paid for and we have enough retirement to live on OK. Plus the medical care is great. This area lives on the tourist and so there are additional sales tax on food, drink and rooms.
Yes, we can have long winters (especially this year - 50" of snow in April. But there are lots of lakes and pine trees. 4 seasons a year can some times be a pain in the rear, but we like the area. - jcollins62ExplorerAs a soon-to-be-retired LEO, one criteria for me to factor into the formula is the states that do not tax gov't pensions. But that's my formula. Everyone has different math according to their life.

Speak for yourself, I have common sense enough to know that if you need a gun, you need it BADLY! And RIGHT NOW! - noe-placeExplorerHey Silvercorvette, I'm a Vette owner AND a retired cop too. Move the guns discussion to general issues and open a debate on the issue as it seems to push a lot of people's buttons.

- freedatlastExplorerCriteria considered for our perfect t retirement place? Great kids and grandkids reasonably near, house paid for, friends who have known us for years and love us any way! Cheap deisel fuel can't compete. ;-)

I was reluctant to bring up guns because I did not want to turn a discussion about where to retire into a gun debate. I have strong beliefs about the right to protect myself. About 15 years after I retired I had someone break into my house and if I didn't have a gun I would be dead. I have been through three operations and do not have the strength to defend myself against a younger stronger man. I am afraid that any further discussion about guns will get this subject closed so this will be my last comment about gunssilvercorvette wrote:

I paid 1/3 the property tax in CA due to living in same house over 30 years. Fire insurance is way cheaper in CA when you have a fire hydraunt close by and fire station less than a mile away. Pricey car insurance. Don't have to drive far to shop but getting out of town to camp was a major project. Most of our camping was sailing up & down the coast because we were a mile from beach.
silvercorvette. As a retired LEO you have a 50 state CCW. So why did bring up that issue?
I was pointing out that most people that do not have the right to carry in 50 states are probably the people that need it most. As we get older we are not as strong a we were when we were younger which should be something people should consider. Also people that are not familiar with the area they are visiting may accidentally wander into a high crime area. There were a few times I made a wrong turn and discovered I was in what might be considered a bad part of town. I was comforted by the fact I had the ability to protect myself but there are many people that do not have the option that retired police officers do.
16 years of full-timing here, camping in all states, including Alaska, in public parks including national forests and boondocking out in the middle of nowhere by ourselves....we've never been afraid and have had no problems. Using common sense is all you need - not a gun! - 2gypsies1Explorer III

Taxes( income, property, sales, intangible, etc.), education, housing prices, utilities, etc. Its been a while since I checked it, but some states tax your SS income, some tax all your income, some investment income, etc. Its been a while since I looked, but I remember two adjacent states where one had a sales tax but no income tax for seniors, and the other had an income tax but no sales tax. They suggested living on the border in one state and shopping in the other.
