Any maintenance needed on propane tanks?

I may be wrong here, but I don't think there is any requirement to have LPG "TANKS" recertified at any time. LPG "CYLINDERS", however, do require recertification.

Anyone want to site chapter and verse here. I think it can be found here;

THE U.S. DOT (DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION) controls the jurisdiction of the transportation of hazardous goods in commerce in the United States. Manchester Tank cylinders conform with strict compliance to DOT specifications 4BA, 4BW, and 4E. These specifications are in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) - Title 49 (Transportation). In addition, most cylinders conform and are approved under Transport Canada specifications 4BAM, 4BWM, and 4EM, and are regulated by the Compressed Gas Association (CGA).

USDOT portable cylinders, up to 100 pound capacity, have recertification requirements.
ASME tanks, however, have no recert requirements. ASME tanks are the frame mounted tanks commonly found on motorhomes or propane powered vehicles.
However, I have read that Canada has a recertification requirement for ASME tanks used for motor fuel. I do not know if that is a nationwide requirement or a provincial requirement, or just an urban myth.

Just had a cylinder recertified not long ago. They need to be recertified after 12 years (as opposed to other answers showing 10 years) at a cost of about $3 or $4. That certification, I believe, is good for a further 5 years, after which it needs to again be recertified. A cylinder can be recertified a total of 3 times.

When we had our (C) it was mounted under the vehicle and filled the same way the ones on a (A) was filled. There was never any mention of having to have it recertified as it was considered part of the vehicle system and being it "was NOT removable" it did not fall under the portable tanks regulations. My suggestion is to go to a "Propane dealer" and ask the pros the question you have asked here.

Inspect the TANK for rust...wire brush
Inspect the hoses for cracks/weak spots
Check fittings for leaks......soapy spray
Clean it.....wipe it down
Touch up paint

Glad to see some caught it/got it right--tanks vs cylinders. Some propane vendors don't know.

Propane cylinders have a re-certification requirement 12 yrs. after date of mfg. stamped on collar
Propane tanks do not have this requirement......but it is recommended that 10 yrs. after mfg. date that the relief valve be replaced

On a motor home, Only maintenance is routine inspection and re-filling, If you find rust starting to develop, remove carefully and spray it down with a good rust control paint (I like ACME better than the fish oil based Rust-o-lem.)

On portable tanks,, See above plus regular re-inspection by a certified re-certifier as needed (The pump jockey at the re-fill station **SHOULD** be able to tell you when they will next need re-cert).. It is a question on a test he took once.

There is no recertification requirement for the permanently installed ASME LP tanks typically used on motorhomes in the US period, end of story. Only the portable DOT cylinders more commonly used on TT's require periodic recertification. See the previously posted cites...

The regulator has a vent that is facing down and is covered. make sure the cover is on at all times. If the vent becomes clogged it can be cleaned with a toothbrush.
