Dodge a bullet!

Our friend had the plastic water line break feeding his ice maker in his stick house. He was gone for a day and half and had $250,000.00 damage done to his house and contents. We always shut our main water supply off when we leave.

My solution was to put the filter on the faucet, in addition to the one at the spigot. With it on the gooseneck faucet it swivels 360 degrees and filtered water is only used for drinking and cooking.

Been turning off water for years when we leave...have seen too many rigs with water pouring out everywhere and no one home...

Went away for a week-end and my house flooded from the plastic line on the fridge splitting. Huge inconvenience while the insurance company did a $60,000 repair to my house. Now I don't go away without shutting off the water AND turning off the power to the electric hot water tank. Don't leave power on to the tank or you could burn out the top element. I had another line pop in a different house but luckily I was home and caught it quickly. It's amazing how many people away for weeks and don't shut water off.

In a house don't forget the washer hoses. Many are still made out of rubber. Seem waay too many of those breaking and flooding an entire house while they were away on vacation. I always shut the water off to the washing machine.

IMHO, JMHO I think many newer RV'ers don't think of the ramification of even just a little bit of water on the floors or inbetween the walls of an RV. Yes our houses may have particle board under tile, carpet or hardwood laminate BUT there is REAL solid wood and/or concrete under that!

If water ruins your carpet in a real house and 'maybe' goes thru to the laminate you just put new laminate down over the existing wood floor and/or concrete floor.

In an RV the laminate/particle board IS your floor. Your ONLY floor. It gets wet and falls apart you have no floor. There is no concrete or sub floor. And RV walls are all particle board also.

Which is why it is so important that 'water' does not get to anything in an RV.

Another reason to keep the water pump turned off while camping without services.

The control circuit monitoring the water pressure will use some of your house battery power storage. Just another contributor to the parasitic usage.

I've never really given it much thought up until now. Now I'll make sure my water is turned off whenever I leave camp for the day.

We always turn off the water and the water heater when leaving the RV even if it is only for a short period of time. We have a piece if property with a garage, no house, and the garage has a full bath. We also turn off the water heater and shut the water off that comes into the garage. When we leave the area for the winter, we run antifreeze thru all the lines including the washer and then lock the water shut at the meter. Keep in mind this is a small town and we were given a lock and key from the utility to do this. That way we do not have to track them down to get water service whenever we are there. Better to be proactive than have to deal with damage.

We turn off water while away from RV and thought no problem. Wrong,! we had the toilet valve leak while we were in the RV and never heard it. $4000 later we now have a battery operated water alarm in our commode area . They are avaiable at most ACE hardware stores for about $20.

I was turning off my water when I'd leave but I got to worrying about the after-market electric hot water heater I installed in my Attwood gas hot water heater so now I don't. Under normal conditions, do I need to worry about the heater element burning out if the water's turned off for maybe 8 hours.
