F 150 trans questions

OK heres a question for those of you smarter than me. (not hard).
What is up with the transmission in the F 150? Towing with a 2010, 4.? V8. Did not have factory tow package. Added trailer brakes, lights, class 3 hitch. Have trans cooler but it isn't in yet. Truck is rated to tow about 8000 lbs. I understand wind drag. I tow an amerilite 21. Last weekend we towed an enclosed cargo trailer 14' weighing under 3ooo lbs about 150 miles on the highway at 65 in tow haul, after about 80 miles it starts hunting through gears, only changing about 200 to 300 rpm per shift. I had cruise on. All of a sudden the trans temp shot up for no reason. I kicked off cruise, temp went back down. I lost speed on uphills and picked up on downhills. South Florida so an overpass counts as a hill.
Question Doesn't tow haul change the shift points in tow haul with cruise? Can I just not use cruise even with a V nose trailer this lite? Or is there something wrong with my tranny. Hard to believe that a truck rated to tow 8000 lbs and cargo capacity of 1600 has this much trouble with this small of a trailer.
What say you?

  • As you don't have a cooler. Put it on, and then you will see a big difference. Your truck is not rated to tow very much without a trans cooler
  • Part of my question is, other than delaying upshifts, what does "tow haul" do? Would a tuner for towing help with gear selection. I was watching the trans temp guage as soon as it started hunting. It stayed at norm for over 1/2 hr then in a minute shot up. Wasn't there 20 seconds before I tuned off cruise and baby'd it back down. Shouldn't be necessary with a V8 truck. Obviously heat wasn't the original problem.

It was really weird. It went from 2200 to 2500 to 2800, and kept shifting back and forth. I understand newer fords have "select shift" where you can force it to stay in any gear. Is even this small of a trailer really that big of a load? Its only about 1500 empty and maxes at just over 3000. I'm in south florida so no hills here.

There is your problem. Constant shifting / hunting. Creates HEAT. Read you manual, and you will see that Ford tells you to turn OFF overdrive IF the transmission is hunting. And running with the cruise on, makes the engine work to maintain speed, so it will cause hunting as well, as it drops gears to maintain your set speed.

BTW. With out the trans cooler / tow package. It is NOT rated to tow 8000lbs.
  • I wish. even the first downshift was to a gear that would have been completely capable. It has tow haul. My 06 F 150 has " OD off" which seems to work better. also I think the 06 is a 4 speed, where the 10 should be a six speed. Just seemed like too many gears way to close together. Thanks for the input.
  • Sounds a little weird I admit. You might want to ask your Ford mechanic. I don't have that truck and don't know what transmission it has. Does it have a way to tow in 3rd rather then drive? If so maybe you should do that.

  • If it only changed a couple of 100rpm then what you felt was probably the torque converter locking and unlocking as opposed to gear changes. What do you mean by "towed at 65 with tow haul"? Not sure, but if your truck doesn't have the tow package then it likely wouldn't have a tow/haul mode either. You shouldn't tow with cruise on unless on flat ground where the truck is able to hold speed and gears.
