For those Who Monitor the Temperature in the Refridgerator

What type of Thermometer do you use and where do you place it? Also what kind of readings do you get?

We have been RV'ing for a LONG time and I have NEVER been happy about the way the refrigerators cool (or lack of cool) so for the past few years I have been monitoring the temps using a digital Thermometer. The kind that reads inside and outside Temps. Never been happy I just put up with it I am about ready to toss the thermometer out and say the ^%(*# with it and if I die from bad food so be it.

Yes we do everything from not putting warm food in there to having fans on the inside AND outside. Trust me on this I have tried every trick in the book.

Wish I had a source for Dry Ice closer..... LoL

  • ether put a fan behind or in the box or both. it will help cool down a little better.
  • We do what Tachdriver does. We have a bulb type thermometer with red dye hanging on the shelf in the freezer. Reads somewhere between zero and ten degrees, unless the door is open for a long time. Real test is that ice cream stays hard.

In the fridge portion we have an indoor/outdoor digital mounted to the wall next to the fridge with the wired outdoor sensor tied to the middle shelf. Reads between thirty seven and forty two degrees, unless the door has recently been opened.

Only times we get higher temps is when we forget to turn the fridge back on after a stop for gas.
  • Thanks Dutch and Tech......... It could be my cheap Wal-Mart monitor also

Like this may need to buy!!
We can get -10 in the freezer and 34 in the refer, but would like a little more consistent temps, sometimes the freezer will get to +10 degrees.
  • Wishbone we HAD a Norcold and could do that but now we have a Dometic and it does not do that......

    midnightsadie yours sounds like mine...
  • I have both an analog one you put ini refer and a outdoor/indoor temperature that has an outdoor sensor that is wired. I put that in the refer and run the wire on the hinge side and taped on a panel above the refer.
  • my dig thermo is off about 6deg from the one siting in the frig. but your right there all a pain in the butt. got one right now its 10deg in the freezer and 42deg in the box . and won,t get any cold in the box.
  • My Norcold fridge has a diagnostic menu that you can get to by holding down "Temp Set" and "Mode" for a few seconds. One of the menu items shows the temperature of the sensor on the cooling unit..... Anything less than 22*, and I'm happy with how it feels in the freezer and fridge. My sensor fluctuates between 17* and 22*. If you open the door, you can see it go up a couple of degrees.

It's not an actual temperature reading inside the fridge or freezer, but I can easily tell if it's outside the norm at a glance.
