Hitch Shank Height for Ram 4x4?????

We have a 34' vlite rv by flagstaff. We just bought a 2014 Ram 2500 4x4, which sits extremely tall compared to our previous 4x2.

I'm thinking we will need a taller shank.

Also, I'm anticipating the purchase of a new equalizer 1200 hitch.

Anyone using this combination or have any ideas regarding shank height??

Can a non equalizer shank be used with an Equalizer hitch??

Thanks
  • The TT Mfg can tell you what the proper ball height should be. That would be inches to the top of the ball on level ground.

I assume your Ram 4X4, like mine, has a factory Class 5 hitch installed. I cant see why you would need to spend the money on the equalizer hitch. I;d try towing it a goodly distance properly loaded first and see how it goes. That trailer should have very little effect on your truck.

Hitch it up and measure the amount of squat you get. My guess is it will be minimal.
  • Thanks Houston, that's exactly what I was looking for....
  • We just went through this exact same thing.

It took quite a while for me to figure out a 6" drop was really 11 inches long. Add about 5.5" to every 'drop' for the actual vertical size of the shank.

After much research I found the Curt 17120 was the one we needed which is called a 9 inch drop but is really 14" on the vertical part. Amazon for $59.06 with free shipping, which is less than half the local rate for the same part which is 40 miles away.
  • Since you have the new truck, can you back it up to the trailer and take a measurement? That's what I told my brother to do when he called me to measure mine, a 4x2, when he bought a 4x4 version of my truck. He wanted to know what size of shank to buy for his horse trailer. It hooks up level with a standard 2" offset hitch on my truck. He did and bought an proper hitch. Just wondering.
  • Luckily I have a brother who is a certified welder. I had him take my existing hitch and using steel plates weld a new shank on top to lower the hitch about 4" to work with my new 4X4 truck. It's heavy but did the job for the 5 years we had the TT.
  • Stop by a dealership with your tapes measure and make a quick measurement.
  • Click here, put in the correct measurements, and you will know exactly which shank to purchase if you get a new Equal-i-zer hitch. :)
