I'd get some "Beware Of Dog" signs around your fences and invest in an alarm and security cameras. We installed the 8 camera Lorex system from Costco. It's pretty cool, you can view your cameras from the road and even set it up to email you pictures when it detects movement.
The goal is, when a thief looks at your house to make him think other houses are way less of a risk to break into. Sorry this happened!
