How long can I leave my camper un-attended ?

I left my Avion camper on my property of close to 30 years. I think in all that time I only entered it twice. I should have checked it earlier because the rear plastic roof vent had broke and let in whatever rain that you get in Phoenix. It did damage the floor and some interior wood. All the upholstery was rotted and the plastic was brittle. It looked like the worst RV ever made, but the structure was great. After cleaning out he dead birds and bugs and completely rebuilding the interior, it looks great.

Our TT sits at the lake full time and we get the bags of mice poison we put in the camper, along with bounce dryer sheets. I have never had issues the poison makes them look for water so they leave the camper before they die and then no dead mouse smell. When we store the 5th wheel in the show for the winter my wife always does dryer sheets inside and moth balls on the ground around the camper, and so far have not had any problems.

thanks for all the help everyone . my biggest concern was having 30 spiders, or a rats nest in there or something ... seems like I'll be ok with dryer sheets, moth balls, and that spray stuff that lasts 6-8 weeks ..

I would stay away from mothballs with a 5 month old involved. I would get some good old mouse traps with peanut butter and spread them around the rig. Maybe some stick traps they work on mice and bugs. Of course if you get a mouse on the stick trap that can be a little gruesome on the little fellow and will stink up while rotting.

I have my rig parked near a feral cat colony. My biggest concern is the caulk on the roof, the status of the tires, and making sure the appliances are run occasionally. A hornet's nest in the A/C coils can put a major crimp on things.

For two-legged rat protection, my trick is to have my rig several miles from a paved road, and 20 miles from any notable highway, well out of sight, and behind a locked gate. It isn't 100%, but so far, so good.

Mice and bugs can be discouraged with relative ease, moth balls, dryer sheets and such.... Makes them go elsewhere.

The 2 legged varmits are another matter however. However if its far enough off the road to not be easily seen,, they too may shop elsewhere.

I know that many small resort towns in MN and WI have a local handyman that services cabins and such for absentee owners. My best source for local information like this is the local Bait Shop. If the area is small in population, the Bait Shop will know who lives close.

I wouldn't use mothballs around small children. There is too much risk. I don't use them at all because I never have a moth problem. The mothballs either contain paradichlorobenzene or naphthalene. To deter rodents the concentrations would have to be as high as breathing inside a paint thinner can.

Snuggle dryer sheets also seem to work well. I have used them in my TT and boats for years while they are in storage and have never had a problem with mice or insects.

Anything that has been stored with mothballs should be aired for at least a few hours before using/wearing.

You can also put the article(s) in the dryer on "Fluff" (no heat) for about 20 minutes.
