Jeeps - Patriot vs Liberty vs Compass vs Cherokee

SO, still looking. DW still not crazy about the CRV. It's in our back pocket but we thought we would give the Jeep offerings a look. I don't know much about jeeps other than a wrangler - which we are ruling out due to the inability for MIL to get in and out of it. So no Wrangler shouts please. Of the 4 I have listed, anyone with any experience or opinions? We want to tow 4 down, would like 4wd and want to stay under 4,000 lbs. ALso on a budget. I am sure they rank somehow on the price scale but it seems so close it's hard to tell. (Sans the high end CHerokee - not going there)

I thought you gave up with your last post. Something about heels and dresses and getting in and out. The patriot and compass will probably have the lowest ground clearance ( if not 4 wheel drive). Not sure about those models but you will most likely need to buy 4 wheel drive to be able to tow 4 down. I assume your talking new?

The Cherokee is probably going to be the best riding compared to the Compass & Patriot. Those two only come in 4 cylinder most likely, where the Cherokee has a 6 cylinder option. It weighs under 4000lbs.

The Cherokee will need to be the "active drive II transmission" and is only available in 4 wheel drive. Your best bet is the limited or Latitude with that option. The trailhawk has a higher ground clearance and firmer ride with other options you probably never use.

Trust me if you get the leather seats the are way too comfy. You'll have problems staying awake.

As far as those with all the problems, we have owned 4 without any problems and one we personally drove over 290,000 miles.

You need to go drive the Cherokee. It is a comfortable ride. You can talk all day about it. Take a test drive.

    Liberty is no longer made.

We didn't give up. We were looking at wranglers but care for wife's mother who had a stroke and wouldn't be able to get into a wrangler. Nothing about heels and dresses, thanks . I'm sold on the crv but dw isn't . She wants to look at these.

  • I drove a 2012 Jeep for a couple years, put 80k on it. Overall I liked it in terms of seating, visibility, storage capacity, features, etc. UConnect stinks compared to Sync in my 14 Escape. Big downfall was ride quality, pounded the snot out of my prostate.

It was a Sport model and I'm nearly certain it had a neutral position for the transfer case which would be ideal for flat towing.

From day one the rig had a vibration that two dealers could not resolve. I guess I just got used to it or tired of trying to fight the system to get it fixed after the third or fourth trip. Several repairs along the way to 80k. OE struts were garbage at 15k. Lower Control arms at 40k. 4wd module and Air Bag Module along the way too. Plugs and wires at 60k. I put up with the pulverized windshield till about 70k. Chrysleritis showed up in grand fashion (as expected) shortly before turning it in, HVAC system was almost useless.
I'm very glad I didn't have 38 more payments to make on it.....

I'd be looking at a Terrain or Acadia myself......

Just remember that other than the Wrangler some of the later models Jeeps are not towable 4 down.

According to the dinghy towing guide all of these are. Some require a specific model

Effy; what is the difference between what I said and what you said???

Lol, I guess nothing. All of the models I mentioned can be towed 4 down . Some versions of those cannot. I think we are saying the same thing, I thought maybe we weren't

  • We tow a Jeep Patriot. However, only standard transmissions are towable for the Patriot. It is a reasonably priced vehicle and relatively light (3,100 lbs.) as well.

  • I had an '06 Liberty CRD years ago. It was a nice little vehicle, but turned out to be just a little small in the cargo compartment for us.
I also had an '05 Grand Cherokee, with the Hemi engine. Nice, but a little much.
Since you have eliminated the Wrangler, I just won't go there.
IMO, the Liberty would be just the ticket, based on what you have stated.
    good luck in your search.
