Low clearance means less than 13'6" of clearance. I cannot imagine that being a problem with an RV. You can go to each state's highways website where they publish a listing of all the places that have less than that amount of clearance. You will very few listings.
The clearance listings are primarily to alert drivers with wide loads where they may not be able to stay in the right lane to make it under an overpass or through a tunnel (as with the tunnel at Zion).
You might be surprised by how many less than 13'6" clearances there are in various states.
AITA Online - Pirate1ExplorerI paid for the low clearance poi and find it a pita to install. I have it on one GPS but it has yet to notify me of a low bridge even though I drove under one of them yesterday (my auto gps set up with low clearance poi).

Advice from an old bridge engineer.
- down_homeExplorer III have though of getting one of the expensive Over the Road Rig GPS. I don't think they would risk a law suit by a Trans Company if a rig hit a bridge.
Our Garmin and Rand McNutty is off the course, so to speak, a good bit of the time. Co Pilot watches all that stuff but we have gotten stuck in some tight places like across the river from Louisville and nearly hit a RxR bridge somewhere in east Indiana. Didn't show up on GPS. - noe-placeExplorerI just read the signs that tell how low the clearance is. :W
- AdirondackJackExplorerBeing originally from the Northeast where there are many low bridges we always check any route with our Rand McNally Motor Carriers' Road Atlas. It lists the low bridges by route but also has all the truck routes clearly marked. We have found that if a route isn't marked for 18-wheelers then that route may have bridge weight restrictions as well. Not ready to try our luck on 5 Ton weight restricted bridges.
- lakeside013104ExplorerThank you all. Helpful information.
Old-Biscuit, that cemetery turn you described sounds very interesting. Glad it was you and not me! I do carry a chain saw for events like that.
Lakeside - keymastrExplorerI think it depends on the Garmin model what options you have. Go to settings and make sure you hsve selected fastest route rather than shortest route. Shortest may take you on logging roads if the distance is shorter. There is also usually a preference setting for major highways that is helpful but not all models have them.
- Dutch_12078Explorer III have the lowclearances.com POI on our Garmin nuvi GPS, and it has warned me a couple of times about a problem overpass up ahead. I have the alert set to warn me 2 miles away, so there's time to find a turn around and/or alternate route.
