There has always been debate about getting your RV trailer inspected in Texas. While the law has always been on the books, very few (me included)ever did it. My trailer did not even come with an inspection sticker when new.The state has put a stop to all that, effected March 1st. You will have to have a successful inspection in the electronic database before the state will renew your license plates. There is a special process for out-of-state RV'rs. Now I have to find some place big enough to drag my 38' fiver!Good luck, fellow Texans.

I assume it's the former but I learned long ago not to assume.

Trailer inspection has been on the books for years. The change is mainly aimed at false license and inspection stickers that are a sizable industry here in Texas. Along with fake driver licenses it's a major problem here. I don't think the fees have gone up, but I could be wrong. People will need a valid inspection that is electronically transmitted to the state. Without it the vehicle can't be licensed. I'm for it if only because it will remove a lot dangerous vehicles from the roads.

Sounds like West Virginia. My brother says the inspection station is a drive thru. No appointment needed, just drive in, they check lights, send you on your way.

Its really just a pain! Took 3x longer to hook up, drive to inspection station, back home and unhook than the 2 min's they spent checking the turn signals and running's lights. Sad, but that was it for my $7.50

I used to live in PA and know the inspection system well. Its a lot more "relaxed" here in Texas.

Today's inspection was $7 and took longer to do the paperwork than the inspection.

Double that price in Pennsylvania.

My local shop does my truck and trailer on the same day. They have to inspect brakes on both (at least one tire per axel must be pulled) so I spend 1/2 a day hooking up, unhooking, re-hooking, then unhooking at home again.

Don't see many rust buckets on the roads with PA plates, so it must work.

I got ours inspected Monday. It cost $7.50 at the inspection station. Then I went to the courthouse for registration to complete the process. No big deal.

I was wondering the same thing. If they carefully inspected the tires, they would find many ST starting to show signs of ply separation. So this is doing everyone with ST tires a favor, having a train professional look at their tires!

Just got back from the inspection station where i asked what they look at.

Make sure all the exterior bulbs work
Glance at the tires
Make sure the emergency brake cord isn't secured to a chain, but somewhere else on the frame of the TV (kudos for that one)
Check the emergency chains

The whole process took a few minutes and cost $7.

Look for this to be the precursor to other changes in enforcement of current laws such as the DL classifications needed for RV's and those pulling trailers over 10K.. It's all going to be in the same database now..

Personally I have no problem with this, the fees are the same as before with the exception that the inspection station is no longer responsible for collecting and remitting the state's portion.

Along the same note... I've never NOT had my trailers inspected and can't fathom blatantly breaking the law like some folks freely admit to on these threads.. Why risk a $125-$175 ticket for an hour of your time and a total of $14.50

Inspections don't help much. Texas isn't much safer than CA in the range of vehicles, where CA demands smog checks.
