Pull behind

Can anyone tell me if a 1989 f-150 5 speed (over drive) manual shift can be pulled 4 down? I have a sweet running 1989 and would like to take it with me on some trips.
  • If it is a 4X4 it should be possible to put the transfer case in neutral. That will help with the transmission lubrication problems.

Exactly! Towability depends on lubrication. Many manual transmissions are splash lubricated. The splashing is done by the cluster gear, which only turns when the engine is running and the clutch engaged. When being towed, the mainshaft and output shaft bearings do not get any lubrication. Catastrophic transmission failure may occur.
    How lucky do you feel?

  • I think you should talk to several local mechanics that you trust and to some research on line. I was under the impression that the 5 speed transmissions in those trucks had a bad reputation.

They can turn your truck into a true trailer (no power to rear wheels when towing. drive shaft disconnected) and restore it easily when you need to drive.. "Hidden" lever does the magic, can you imagine the chagrin of a car thief trying to drive off with the disconnect, disconnected?

when I had a drive shaft disconnect on my S-10 pickup, I had chagrin 24/7/365. saw it once around town after I sold it. always wondered if it mysteriously jumped out of connection for the new owner and he couldn't figure out why. :)

I agree with the "almost any manual" but the overdrive concerns me

Check your owner's manual, sometimes they advise

Check with RemcoTowingUSA (I doubt it will be on the on-line tool but perhaps customer service can check the archives)

NOTE if it is a rear wheel drive (not 4wd) then for sure it can be towed 4 down but it may require modification.. REMCO.. Well, they supply the modifications or can tell you who does.

  • Almost certainly. Almost any manual trans vehicle can be a toad. Check with your owner's manual. (It's right there in your glove box, no?) Also make sure your tow vehicle, whatever it is, is rated to the mass tonnage ability of your F-150 when fully loaded with accoutrament.
