pulling motorcycle with rv. Open trailer or closed trailer

I want to tow a trike behind my motorhome, I am concerned that if I use a open trailer the trike might get damaged from stones or other stuff, or should I use a closed trailer? Appreciate any comments.

  • Wife and I almost went with the idea of a MH and trailer for our motorcycles. Was going to go with an enclosed trailer. How much is YOUR motorcycle worth to you?
  • Check out Wells Cargo, they have a wide selection of trailers.

Make sure it has electric brakes, and a side door is really handy to get out something after the back is all buttoned up. . .

Check the RV axle weight. Your hitch weight might be 500 pounds, and that will add about 750 pounds to the rear axle, taking away about 250 pounds from the front axle. Sometimes if you are close on weight, you can adjust the water level, and reduce if needed.

Yes I also would agree with enclosed trailer. comes out clean as it went in, no rain worries, and once unloaded, it gives a great place to eat lunch, should rain show up. ..

PS Get a fantastic fan in there too! A couple of lights for loading at night, ect.
  • We have done both and prefer the enclosed trailer that has 6'4" headroom - keeps the bikes clean, protected from damage, and the trailer provides a "garage" while in camp to put clutter away, hang bike gear etc. and you can walk upright in it...
  • Can you add on to the front of the trailer ? Buddy had borrowed a open trailer with about the same height on the front of the trailer. He just took a sheet of plywood laid it up against the front took a couple of vicegrips clamped them tight then zip tied around the vicegrips handles . Went from Southern Ca to Sturgis and back no problems. Coarse thats Jerry rigging it, but if you have access to a enclosed trailer by all means take advantage of it...

Saying all that next year we will be headed to Sturgis with an open trailer (old u-haul trailer) I'll probably put something up in front of the bike to help with any debree but will still be obviously open to rain etc. Would be nice to have an enclosed trailer tho...
  • Has anyone heard or seen a type of cover for front of trike, trailer I'm looking has a 24 in tall guard on front, but I would like to have more protection for trike, have heard something like this is made, but have been unable to find it anywhere.

  • I'd go with the enclosed trailer -better security plus additional storage.
  • I too have done both, but currently have an enclosed trailer. If the open trailer has some fairing around the front damage should be minimized. Somewhat depends on the condition of your trike, distance to travel and types of roads you travel too.
  • We have done both and much prefer enclosed trailer. Our stuff stays secure, rain is no problem and we carry more in the trailer.
