question about parking/living in RV temporarily

so i have an interesting scenario. I live in NJ and unfortunately cannot afford to pay my rent any longer. I will not be able to stay much past October. I have a 31' 5th wheel that is perfectly usable and free. Outside of finding a campground- wondering if there are any areas (land) where I could park it- I guess what I am wondering is- are there people out there with land (farms etc) that would be willing to let an RV park on their property for a smaller fee..... just a thought- It would make sense- I am out of options....
  • Good luck with your search - as others have said water/electricity/sewer hookup are a big deal. In Oregon/Washington state campgrounds charge about $30/40 a night and in my area you can rent a small apt for that. You might find someone who has space/water/electricity ... but sewer might be problematic.
  • I agree, try to find a CG that caters to or has year round sites available. You will be legal, and have hook ups. You might even get a break if you do some work for the CG for a few hours a day. Fla. has volunteer workers in their state parks
and get a free site for working a few hours at the CG. I have never stayed in a CG up north in the winter, (nor do I intend to) but it does seem like it would be rather expensive to heat a unit when it does get as cold as it gets. Good luck and happy camping
  • crown land in Ontario lets you stay 29 days at a time. just stay in a campground once a week or so to dump, refill and recharge. of course I have no idea if this exists in your area or where you have to be for work
  • If I read your post correctly, you are talking about trying to live in a 5th wheel in New Jersey over the winter? That is going to be very expensive to heat. Add that cost into your planning.

It is not as simple as just parking on some one's land with their permission. There are sewer and water issues. Drives in and out. Power availability in sufficient quantity to handle all your needs. Then of course the insurance which should not be a big problem. I agree with the o/p, look for a trailer court that can offer you all these things at a generally reasonable rate.

I agree with Homer. However, you may have some luck with local farmers. Many have 30 and 50 amp power in their barns and sheds as well as water sources. Most farms have clear space around barn, shed and utility areas that might be suitable for an RV. Getting outside the city limits may also get you away from city ordinances prohibiting staying in the RV on private property. I see this done a lot out west where I'm from - but don't know about your area. You might look for an appropriate section on Craigslist to place an ad targeting farmers. Just some thoughts...

  • You could try a Craig's list ad. Short of that all you can do is knock on doors and ask people. Trouble is that many municipalities and townships have rules about people living in trailers and paying rent to the landowner. Not to mention insurance issue for the landowner.

You might try a campground that caters to seasonal residents and see what kind of deal you can work out.
