rear axle on dinghy

the vehicle I want to tow has an automatic transmission which cannot turn while going down the highway. I know I can disconnect the drive shaft but that is a pain in the arse. My question is can I tow the vehicle facing backwards, with the rear axle on the Dinghy and the front wheels on the ground with the steering wheel locked?

  • saw std cab ranger on dolly this AM behind an old class A. I have seen some where they use strong bungee cords to hold the steering wheel in place, you might want to think about the same?
  • It can be done.
    It has been done.
somebody, somewhere, is probably doing it right now.

HOWEVER, do NOT attempt to use the steering lick on the vehicle to hold the front wheels straight. It may not be strong enough. the steering wheel must be VERY securely held in the straight ahead position atg all times whiule being towed in this manner.
Since it is illegal in many states to have a white light on the end of a tow, you will probably have to use magnetic towing lights. They work, and they are inexpensive from Harbor Freight.
  • Yes you can tow backwards, a friend of mine towed his Monte Carlo SS that way for yrs and now tows a new chev HR the same way, no problems.
  • IN A WORD: no. A dolly is designed for front loading. If you tried to load facing backwards, there will be too much overhang on the FRONT, which could cause the rear of the toad to impact the Tow Vehicle on turns. Even with the steering locked, it is very dangerous. When I bought my dolly, the instructions that came with it were explicit: Do not tow backwards.
