Reese High Performance Dual Cam Sway Control system issue

Also called the Strait-Line System.

My Cams are getting flat spots on them with a mushrooming affect with a bur protruding towards the bracket hangers.

Not sure if this is something that happens from normal wear and tear. Not happy with this as I'm sure that this keeps the detent in the bars from seating correctly on the cam now. I'm considering replacing this system since I've had trouble with it before and now this.

Not sure how how the flat spots got there, but most likely when turning where the bars flat side rubs back and forth on the cams.

What's other owner's thoughts and experiences on this?

  • Thanks again guys for the help.

I already set the cams previously, hopefully I can easily see which bar goes where.

BTW, here's some better photos of the Dunes State Park from a couple years ago and some from last year. Nice local campground in the National Lakeshore Park. Only time I can usually get a site there.

    Happy Easter!

Do I need to flip the Cam or will it wear back? I'll set up the bars and see which fit best. They both seem pretty equal and mark Left and Right with tie wraps.

I thought this wasn't normal damage and didn't want to replace it.

    Mike,

No need to flip the cams over. Just set up the WD marks marked for left and right and always use from here forward on the same side. Track the truck & TT 100ft straight, adjust the cam arm length to be exact in the center of the WD bar V notch and run from there.

The new wear pattern will start and then blend in over time to create a perfect matched fit between the WD bar and the cam lobe.

If and when you approach 1/4", 5/16" off the diameter or more cam wear, then you can start thinking about maybe flipping the cam over. Like I said, I expect to be at 100,000 miles before I need to start thinking about to flip the cam over. Your lighter TW, it may take even longer than that.

BTW, neat campground you were at. Thanks for sharing.

  • If it's like the wear in the photos someone else posted then I would continue with them that way. I have had my bars marked L&R since day one.

If you like how the DC performs I would stick with it! Nothing can beat a properly set up DC, other than the HA and ProPride.
  • Thanks everyone, cut short for time so can't post a lot. That's the wear I was talking about exactly.

I thought this wasn't normal damage and didn't want to replace it. The Blue Ox will likely be my next hitch mainly because of the setup and inconvenience issues I had with DC system. The Blue Ox looks super easy to setup and is noiseless on top of it. Read good things from owners so it seems a good sway control system.

Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate the help!

BTW, noticed this wear on my recent local trip with some buddies. :)
  • Hi Mike,

What you are describing is normal as the others have said. There is steel on steel and it will wear "some". More so in the beginning until the contact patch becomes larger the then the wear slows down.

I will highlight as was said by the other poster, you need to mark the left and right WD bar and keep them on the same side all the time. The WD bars and the new DC's are not machined. They are not the same exact length/diameter. You adjust the cam arm to be dead centered in the V of the WD bar. This compensates for the differences and creates a matched set. A wear pattern is created between the cam and the WD bar that is this matched set. If you do not put that same WD bar back on the same side, the wear pattern starts all over again.

To show you this, see pics below. Those pictures was taken after 25,000 miles with a TW of 1,200# on my prior camper. These are my original cams bought in 2003.

I have since moved those same cams to my current trailer and have well over 30,000 miles on them with a 1,600# TW and 1,700# bars and the wear is not a lot more. Since I have this heavy TW, or even on the 1,200# camper, I did use Vase-O-line and it helps on the noise and the wear. If you are at or over 1,000# TW, a very light vase-o-line coat will help. DO not use grease, it cuts too much friction.

After I hit between 75,000 to 100,000 miles I may flip these cams over and start wearing again.

I know you are looking at a Blue Ox, do not know what issue you are trying to fix WD wise or sway control wise, but the Blue Ox will not fix what the Reese hitch and DC cannot correct as far as WD and anti sway. A setup or something else is the issue.

    Hope this helps

  • Ditto on flipping the cams side to side, and marking the bars for left-right.
I also laid my belt sander on its side and smoothed out the surfaces where the bar rides in the cam. And contrary to advice, I wipe some motor oil on the contact surfaces.
  • Agree with all the above.
Also, a light and I mean a VERY light dab of Vaseline might help with wear. If you can see it on there, you've put too much on.
  • It also helps to mark one of the bars and then keep them on the same sides. Helps keep the wear down as the bars are not exactly the same.
  • That's normal and will happen. I just flipped mine after 11 years and 25k miles. You can turn them over and use the other side so you have a new surface.
