It's not just California. We go to Las Vegas every year for the NASCAR race. They had notices posted throughout the campgrounds that wood burning campfires would not be allowed next year. When I inquired as to why, was told is was to reduce the smog in the valley.
Makes sense, when I was growing up in Eugene Oregon we had inversion days a lot during the winter. Wood stoves were the hot item then. Tons of trees in the great north west so it was cheap heat. Eugene sits in a valley and when the wind doesn't blow you get inversions. Not a global warming thing just environmental. - We have 'burn bans' in WA state all the time.. Well, mostly King and Pierce counties and guess when it occurs the most?? During winter when it's below freezing for 2 weeks straight and we can't use our wood stove...
But, if you wanted to burn a 'recreational fire' in your back yard, it's okay... Even when there are fire danger burn bans in place, you can still have a camp fire in a firepit..
Isn't it a good thing we had some 'global warming' after the Ice Age?? If not, we'd all still be living on glaciers!!
Oh well, I guess we can all bring up a video of a burning fireplace on our smart phones and iPads and be happy tweeting it and posting it on facebook...
I'm glad I got to live my childhood during a time when I could ride in the back of a pick up truck, not wear seat belts or a helmet to ride my bike! :)

... and the hot air the politicians generate is causing global warming. - DutchmenSportExplorerI wonder what they would say if I lived in California? The primary heat source in my house if a wood-burning fireplace. We have electric heat, but we've got this really great fireplace with a blower. I suppose I'm screwing-up the environment also? Think they are concerned that my smoke in Indiana is blowing their direction in California! :)

- noe-placeExplorerI see the criticism was from some phd who calls himself a clear air expert. Who ever created such a position and who's the genius school that created a phd program to recognize its validity? What ever happened to parents raising children to appreciate the day as God made it?

- deleted-2ExplorerYou have to remember that most of the BS in CA starts in San Fransisco or way down there where we never set foot.
The rest of the state is just trying to hang on in spite of complicated water restrictions, school closings, capping budget craziness, legislative laziness...on and on...

Did you know that grilling outside on a traditional barbeque grill can be a significant source of air pollution? A simple solution is to replace your old grill with a natural gas grill.
