towing with my new Hensley arrow...

Sooo,

I got my hitch installed. I'll post pics later... get my truck hooked up. set up the WD ( I got the chains and snap up brackets) I wish all brackets were like these...

the chains are held to the bars with cleavis pins and cotter clips. 3/8. on the way out. snapped a pin. nice. ran to My local Ace. grabbed 7/16in pins and clips no issues.

towed like a dream.

unhooking is interesting I found out I don't have enough lube on the stinger. It'll be interesting how the next unhook goes.

I'll fill ya in Sunday when I get home ...

any advice from Hensley owners on angled unhooking?

You're problem may be with having the chains completely undone. The weight and angle of the hitch head hanging on the stinger may be enough to bind it up.

I agree with this. That is why I suggested he loosen the chains so they are not pulling up on the bars and then insert the rod supports(or whatever they are called) that keep the bars in the same place when the chains are loosened. This will keep the bars from putting any pressure on the stinger just like the jacks do when adjusted "sloppy loose".

  • I don't grease the stinger, never have, never will. As mentioned above you need to make sure there is no tension between the hitch and stinger for it to come out easily. I loosen the jacks until they become slack and that's it. Any more than that it will put pressure on the stinger again. That's the beauty of the jacks, you can use them to angle the hitch up, down and side to side to match the angle of the stinger.

  • I'm a bit confused, I grease EVERY moving part on my HA. The DW and I have had many issues with grease on our pants from brushing against the hitch. I find if I don't check the tightness of the bolts and grease the moving parts its hard to hook up and I get a lot of creeking and noises. Besides, dosent the instructions say to grease the stinger?
  • If there is any up or down pressure on the stinger it can be hard to remove. I carried a small piece of thin, flat plastic with me when I had mine. When I could slide it freely both on the top and bottom of the stinger I was ready to pull away.
  • Sometimes a new hitch will tend to stick a bit but will loosen up with a little use and after the paint wears off. I often will spray WD40 on mine to keep it slippery and also to help prevent rust.

  • My hitch is setup with chains. Like a standard WD.. Pretty slick. I was thinking of using a dry lib like silicone or something on the stinger...

I guess there is a tidge of a learning curve... No biggie... Love the hitch!
  • When you unhook, loosen the chains completely so they are loose and not putting pressure on the spring bars, and put the support rods in place.(or make the jacks sloppy loose). Then put your thumb or finger on the joint where the stinger enters the truck receiver (or just watch rhat joint carefully). When you feel (or see) any movement there stop raising the tongue. You should then be able to pull out the stinger easily.

After unhooking as described above, LEAVE THE JACKS ALONE. Do not disturb the hitch head. This will allow you to hook back up again with the hitch head in the same position as it was when you pulled out. The only thing you will need to re-do is the height of the head with thw tongue jack so the stinger can enter.
This procedure works whether at an angle or straight in.

Are you saying you are using snap up brackets with chains instead of the screw jacks. If so that is your problem unhooking. You can't adjust the angle in order to pull the stinger straight out. I suspect it will cause problems hooking too.

There is no lube needed on the stinger whatsoever. That would defeat one of the advantages of the Hensley/Pro Pride (No messy parts during hooking/unhooking)

The screw jacks are a nice and needed to have the angle correct for hooking and unhooking. Plus you don't have to mess with spring bars. Maybe there is something new I'm now aware of.

Hooking and unhooking the Hensley the first few times can be frustrating but once you get the hang of it it is much easier, cleaner and faster than messing with spring bar, chains and prybars. Tows better too.

Watch some of the Hensley hooking videos on youtube. Very informative especially the the up and down adjusting to unhook. Once unhooked properly it will be at the proper angle to rehook.
