13.5 Coleman in Bedroom. Not Impressed

Hi everyone, I purchased a Sprinter Wide Body319 and decided to put a second 13.5 A/C unit in the bedroom. When the compressor kicks in it is very cold. However, the room in general stays in the mid 70's as we are in Florida on vacation. Clearly it is not ducted, controls are on the unit. the 15K kicks butt. Suggestions?? I thought this would freeze us out. First use!!

  • Are you parked in the full sun? This is the time of year that Florida weather patterns and heat dictates that any RV should be in the shade. It makes a huge difference on the A/C ability to cool.

If the air is good and cold when the compressor is on, then the A/C is working properly. It just isn't able to keep up.
  • I gave up utterly on the portable and installed a 5K window unit on the deck as the base for a night table. With my height while laying on the bed being around 26" and the unit on the deck, there is no cold air cascade from the overhead, and since thermal lamination occurs, I'll bet I'm saving >20% in energy costs.

Tripping over pair of ducting hoses is not in the forecast. Outside, condensate falls right into a planter of beefsteak tomatoes. I'd bet a Honda 2K IU would not even hiccup starting this load.
  • Chris where is the thermostat tube and how do I identify.

The unit is 35ft and I thought a secong isolated unit in the bedroom would be great to help keep up. The primary is the main ducted unit with a wall thermostat and it freezes the entire living area. I would think one 13.5 would freeze a small bedroom, however, nope it does not. the thermostat and controls are integrated in the 13.5.

If it only has a single hose, it's really a defective design.
They blow a LOT of air outside through that hose; where does that air COME FROM ???? It's additional hot air sucked in through cracks.
The only worthwhile portable AC unit has TWO hoses.

As for the original question, does this happen when both units are running or just the one ? What condition caused you to opt for a second unit ??

This sounds like the problem I have with most AC/heat units in motel rooms; the spread on the thermostat sucks and can be 6 degrees or more. This is aggravated by having the stat mounted ON the unit where it cools more rapidly than the room does.
  • Under incredibly high humidity conditions >90% my AC units, (all six of them) try to reduce humidity before the temperature starts to drop noticeably. If you have another AC in a different part of your rig and it acts differently then surely the problem lies within the AC.

I have discovered through anger and frustration that "portable" ducted AC units SUCK as far as efficiency is concerned. My LG 5,000 BTU window air cools the room just as well as a Frigidaire 11,000 BTU portable. Double the energy consumption.
  • Is it cycling on and off, or just not keeping up? Cycling- make sure the thermostat capillary tube is in the correct position, mechanical thermostat has a bottom temp of ~65-70.
Not keeping up- measure inlet and outlet temps- should be around 17-20 degrees difference. Make sure all of the collars are in place, and air isn't leaking between return and supply air.
  • Are you using high setting? On my 13.5 the low setting will usually end up with freezing issues and the unit won't cool like it's suppose to.
