5th Wheel REAR stabilizing jacks lubrication questions

My 5th wheel rear stabilizing jacks are not scissor jack but look like these.

The worm screw has become corroded with rust making raising and lowering the jacks difficult. I was going to use PB Blaster and a wire brush to clean them but not sure of the best lubricant to use to keep them from rusting again. I don't think I want to use a grease or similar product that would trap dirt but also not sure if a dry lubricant such as graphite will provide any protection.

Any help is appreciated.

Dave

  • I been squirting oil on them for years. If it gets a little gungy or rusty squirt some more on it. It reaches a happy medium.
  • I've been greasing mine for 15 years and never had a problem with grime build up. I re-grease periodically and if I think about it before a trip to CA or any coastal area. I have never cleaned mine off, but if I thought they were getting damaged by grime I guess I would wipe them off and apply more grease. It does not take much just a light coating.

I guess the 100 plus temps where I live melts the grime and grease off or the occasional driving down the road in a frog choker rain cleans them, I do not know which but they are always relatively clean and go up and down easy as pie. I use a cordless drill most of the time to move them.
  • I find silicone based spray doesn't attract that much grit. Clean them with brake cleaner and give them some lube. If you choose grease, then just ensure that the road grime doesnt build up too much or wear will occur quickly

    X-2 dry lube...
  • Clean them up and use slip plate dry graphite spray. Doesn't collect dirt and provides protection.
  • I have used WD, silicone spray and axle grease. Yes grease attracts dirt but it lasts so that is what I use put only where contact points are.
  • I've tried a lot of things, I now use plain ole axle grease on mine. I know what people say, but I have found grease is the only thing that stops them from rusting and binding, and has longevity of more than 2 hours or the end of the driveway whichever comes first. When the grease gets to much dirt in it, I wipe em off and grease em again (usually once a year in the spring).
