Awning Strap

Manual awning. Standard 18' Sunchaser. Today, the strap that one uses to deploy the awning and slow detraction decided it had done its duty and separated from the traveler that is INSIDE the roller (tube). The ends of said roller are riveted in place and I'm not about to drill them out and pop new rivets in. I plan simply to affix a new strap to the outside of the roller, BUT, having gleaned much from you geniuses here, I thought I'd ask. Another solution? Thanks in advance.

You're absolutely right! It's only on one end, and of course I didn't look at that end because I ASSumed that both were the same. Thank you for posting this BEFORE I started drilling.

BTW, found the strap on Ebay for $7.95 shipped.
  • FYI
there is NO spring tension on the roller cap
the spring tension is on the awning arm cap
the roller cap is free and only held in place to keep things together
the rivets in the roller can be drilled the cap spun to line up the hole
and a couple of sheet metal screws or new pop rivets used to secure the roller cap after you change the strap
i have done this several times
    its a 5 min job

"1/4" drill bit.........drill into grove where awning strap is at an angle (back at one end)
You can then remove old broken piece and slip new one in it's place."

See, THIS is why I come here. I didn't know that replacement straps came with travelers attached. Thank you, thank you.
