HELP! Problem w/ 97 Roadtrek propane connection

I bought a 1997 RT Versatile in the fall, and I went to two different places to fill the propane today for the first time, and in BOTH places they could not thread the connection to dispense the propane. Turns out the plastic bottom edge of the propane compartment is too high to allow for the hose to align properly, and perfectly straight with the valve, as the hose is resting on/hitting the the top edge of the compartment, so it can't drop down to the proper position. I am sure other's have had this issue, as the propane dispensaries all use standard connectors. HELP! I'm going on my first trip, and can't get propane!

Any suggestions?

Hi - I have an 03C190P. Where is your propane fill? Mine is in the middle of the rear bumper - which sounds similar to yours. Some propane fill stations balk at this location, but only once in many years/miles of travel have I encountered a fill station that could not fit to fill the onboard tank. You may just need to find a different fill station. However, based on the year of your RT, it IS possible, if your fill location is the same as mine, that the fiberglass bumper cover might have shifted enough to prevent the fill from fitting correctly. If that is the issue, try a body shop to adjust the bumper cover. ST

My fill is under the driver side step well.. different location. The fiberglass was in the proper position. Problem solved with angled fitting. Thanks anyway :)

Weird that the P.O. didn't have the same problem...Have the nozzles changed that much recently?

If I were you, I'd go to an RV or propane shop (not just a gas seller) and ask them to fix you up with whatever adapter you might need to get around that obstruction..

Unfortunately the PO never filled the tank, as he never went camping. He bought it with a 1/2 tank, replaced all the appliances, used it as a daily driver for a few mths, and then sold it with the same amt of propane as when he bought it. I already used the 1/2 that was in there not knowing I would have this problem.I am located in Nassau County, Long Island NY.. not too many Rv places around here. I will have to do some research on finding an adapter, or notching out the compartment.. i'm still open to suggestions if anyone else has had this problem with their RT

    Gotcha...

While Nassau may not have RV places, I guarantee you it's got gas appliance supplier/installers!

Any one of them could solve this problem for you...

    Good luck!

This was great advice. I went to a gas supplier/installer, and they were able to make me up a 45 degree adapter with brass fittings right there on the spot, they then used it to test it, and fill my tank. It worked great! I just have to remember to have it with me when traveling. Thank You!

  • If going to a propane service shop doesn't get it fixed for you, ask the mods to move this thread to the Class B forum. Some of those folks own or have owned older Roadtreks, and may have seen similar issues. Both of my RT's were slightly newer, with a different location for the tank.
