Ice cream stays soft. Wonder why?

Our 5 yr. old Norcold works fine. Only issue is DW ice cream (sugar free) stays soft. All other items in the freezer compartment is frozen solid!! :h

  • Ice Cream is one of the hardest items to freeze solid in any fridge. A contant temperature of at least 0 to -5 is reqiured to freeze it rock hard. Most fridges only get to around 5 to 0. The best thing to do is limit how many times the freezer door is opened.

Having similar problems with my setup I sometimes bring along my DORM SIZE smaller compressor type fridge if we going to be staying for several days. This has a freezer compartment where my inside fridge does not...

Fortunate for me I have enough room on my trailer front deck to haul the extra fridge with us.

When camping at regular electric camp sites its not so much a problem as we usually only have two days of frozen food with us at any given time. Have to go get ice everyday anyway.

Its only a problem when we are camping off the power grid somewhere and have to live out of the 5-day ice chest and generator power for the fridge a couple of times a day.

I like to have some ice cream every now and then as well...

We manage the best we can with what we have...

  • You could try one of those small battery operated fans, as said before Absorption Fridge Soft Ice Cream Syndrome.....
  • Keep it against the back wall of the freezer, which is the coldest part.
FWIW, the 0 is pretty easy for absorption models to reach- the temperature of the ammonia is -44 in a properly charged system.
  • Probably because the ice cream needs it to be colder in order to be hard (i.e. at -1C ice cubes are going to be hard. at -1C ice cream will not be hard).

Unfortunately, in general absorbtion fridges in RV do not cool nearly as well as compression fridges (like in homes). The freezer in our Dometic (which works fine) probably doesn't go any lower than 5F and is usually around 10F - that's cold enough to freeze but it's not cold enough for some items (e.g. ice cream). I believe the proper temperature for a freezer is 0 to -10F.
