Installing a rack on my new TV cab roof

I just bought a new Dodge Ram 1500 pick up and would like to put a single roof rack on the roof.
On my last one which was a Ford F-150, I was able to use a system from Yakama called "Landing pad 7" where you drill through the roof but not through the head liner and use what is similar to a large strong toggle bolt.
I would like to use the exact same system, but am not sure where on the roof would give me the necessary clearance of 2 cm that is required.
I contacted Yakama and they said it would be best to check with Dodge.
The dealer where I bought it couldn't help so now I have a call into
the main Dodge people am awaiting a reply

I was wondering if any one here has installed a rack system on the same vehicle and could tell me where it is clear, or even can be done without coming through the head liner?

Don't know what you have or want to haul so just throwing out an idea. I have a air deflector that mounts to the bed right behind the cab. With out the deflector the mounting rail makes a heck of a rack.

I'm thinking of adding a rail to the front using the tow hook mounts. I'll tie it into to the air deflector rack and top a 180 lb boat when towing my 5er.

    Thanks, but no thasnks.
I want it just like the rig that I have had for the past ten years, (if I can get it)
I have, (am putting) a cap on the truck bed which will have two Yakama bars across it, and this will make a third one for the roof.
I carry two long sea kayaks, and a 17 foot canoe all at the same time
I can't have an overhang since I tow a travel trailer, and I would wipe the boats stearns out on turns
With the three sets of bars, I can load either from the back or the front, but then for carrying them, I can slide them to the front two bars where they won't have an overhang.

Clear as mud - right !

Do you have some pictures of your old setup with the kayaks on the truck?
  • I have the Thule traverse footpack 480 and footpack kit 1520. They will fit the 1500 reg and crew cab also. They just clamp on, no drilling. Have had 5 bikes up there or kayaks.

I do not have one, but if i was to install one, i would remove the headliner to ensure i don't drill into any wires that may be going across the roof. I would also use regular bolts and washers with lots of sealant and some Loc-tite on the bolts.

With the Yakama system, there is no need to remove the headliner, (which I would never do on a new truck)
And I would never substitute their mounting hardware with regular nuts and bolts - that would be a bad mistake.
My last truck had 119,000 miles on it with the Yakama system carrying loads of two kayaks and one canoe almost on a daily basis.

I am hoping that Dodge will come up with the info I need
