NO DEISEL IN GAS CAN?

Yeah, too many old wives tales on this forum to believe anything without a proper source of authenticity. So I found this federal rule (Note nothing about the container's color):

§ 75.1905 Dispensing of diesel fuel.
(a) Diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines may be refueled only from safety cans, from tanks on diesel fuel transportation units, or from stationary tanks.

(b) Fuel that is dispensed from other than safety cans must be dispensed by means of -

(1) Gravity feed with a hose equipped with a nozzle with a self-closing valve and no latch-open device;

(2) A manual pump with a hose equipped with a nozzle containing a self-closing valve; or

(3) A powered pump with:

(i) An accessible emergency shutoff switch for each nozzle;

(ii) A hose equipped with a self-closing valve and no latch-open device; and

(iii) An anti-siphoning device.

(c) Diesel fuel must not be dispensed using compressed gas.

(d) Diesel fuel must not be dispensed to the fuel tank of diesel-powered equipment while the equipment engine is running.

(e) Powered pumps shall be shut off when fuel is not being dispensed.

I'd have to see a citation to the law before I'd believe that. Of course there are mighty stupid laws out there so it wouldn't be surprise.

BTW I just checked on 5 gal gas cans, at Wally world they run $25 and up. Rural King has the same can for $11 if have one locally. And I really suggest avoiding those new cans that you have to push down and hold down a button while pouring from the can. Holding that can while you fill a 2.5 gal generator tank will give your thumb a workout.

You know that sign on every fuel pump that says, "Warning It Is Unlawful and Dangerous To Dispense Gasoline Into Unapproved Containers" well there you go.

There are lots of regulations about fuel cans; DOT, OSHA as well as State laws.

Just go drop the $8 and by Yellow Diesel fuel can.

I had my issue with a gas pump monkey not allowing me to pump my own diesel even though I showed him the actual Oregon law that said I could. I just left, went across the street.

We're talking Oregon gas station attendants. Nuf said.

Does not matter if you can pump your own fuel in other states, Its still illegal to put diesel in red gas container or vise versa. Its a Federal law not state law.

The only way someone could get my yellow can filled with gasoline would be to steal it, and if they do I hope that they do ruin their truck engine or incinerate themselves....heh

I would have to agree that it is a good idea not to put diesel in a gas can. Certainly gas in a diesel can could be extremely costly to the new generation diesel trucks or lethal to someone thinking they were dispensing diesel with a spark nearby.

While it may sound trivial if it's not illegal to put diesel in a gasoline labeled can it should be. Using gas when you need diesel or vise versa can cause lots of problems.
